While driving to Jiddah, along the long strech of highway I was looking out the window of my brother's SUV. Nothing but low lying sand dunes. It was becoming dull and I was being lulled into sleep. As I started to close my eyes I saw something that was so amazaing it took a moment to sink in.What stretched out before me was a herd of camels that went for miles. There must have been about two thousand of them. And they were the cleanest camels I had ever seen. We pulled over to take pictures and looked around. About a half mile back we saw a yellow Toyota pickup. It was the back end of the herd.We drove a few miles up and found the head of the heard and the lead Toyota. We stopped and talked to the driver. He told us these were camels that were bred for racing, a big sport in the Middle East.I love camels and ride them when ever I have the chance. It was such a hoot to see thousands of...

Be out of your mind! There are a lot of things to see in this country, but it's not worth a vacation. Not that you would have an easy time getting a VISA anyway. I lived in Saudi for 3 years and my favorite part of it was leaving it. I had a lot of great times there, but that was largely due to having some great friends there. Although I had a few Saudi friends, I would say I disliked the people as a whole.

In June 2000, I've spent 2 weeks in Saudi Arabia.YYYOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIt was real great.I was in Jeddah - 11 days, Dammam -1 day, Taif -1 day.And the most impressive city is of course Jeddah. Before I visit this country I've learned much information about Saudi from VT and other sites.DON'T PAY ATTENTION to dangerous precautions and advises about this country. You absolutely must visit this the most Muslim country/birthplace of Islam.I'am not a Muslim but I spent a 'magnifique' time there.Don't trust anybody who affirm that this country is good only for Muslims. Of course there existing some Islamic restrictions (no drugs, no alcohol,no free women, no dance, no cinema etc). Two weeks I spent there was a very little time for real enjoy of this country. Jeddah.Day or night its wonderfull.High buildings from glass, private houses - piece of art, nice big and long cars,...

The desert and camels. There is plenty of both. Also, in the cities, have a walk at prayer time to here the call to prayer being broadcasts over loud speakers from the many mosques. A totally unique experience for any Westerner, non-Moslem. The hospitality of the people. In particular, while doing some work at a power station. I was invited by the security guards to join them for lunch, Arab-style. A lamb and rice dish was served on a communal dish on the floor. You had to use your fingers, no forks. The food was delicious, though rice is hard to eat with just your fingers! I was very impressed by the friendliness of the people.

I lived in Saudi Arabia (Al Jubail) with my wife and 2 kids from 1992 to 1996. This was a great experience. It may not be the best place of the world to live in if you don't like sun. Very interesting culture. Women are not allowed to drive, porc and alcool are strictly forbidden, including in the hotels.Life is cheap, people very friendly. Children have high priority in KSA, are secured against any danger. Main stream: desert, desert, desert...

by DesertRat

When King Fahad returned to Riyadh for the first time in November 1982 after having ascended the throne the previous summer, Riyadh went all-out with lights to welcome him. It was a one-off event. The king was distressed and said that such 'excesses' should never be repeated. It was a glorious spectacle -- while it lasted! <Photo: The British Bank of the Middle East illuminated.

Shopping in the old suqs. Visit the Nabataean ruins at Madain Salih between Medina and Tabuk. The Nabataens were the same people that built Petra in southern Jordan. I miss the cheap prices in the men's shops, but not much else.
