since i have been to the desert recently and terribly missing london, stargazing has become a consolation and enjoyable activity to do in jeddah, romantic too;^) jeddah is blessed with its all-year clear sky and the vast desert and little suburbs that surround it. however, you still cannot see the stars from the city centre as it's very bright and orange-lit.
all what you need to do is just drive out of jeddah, around one hour, know where you are in the desert, following the road signs so you can tell which village or suburb you are passing by, so to know your way back.
i'm not an astronomer or stars amateur but i tell you the sky is quite dark black, amazingly twinkling with all the stars held up there. there're loads of stars and if you hook up with a local bedouin if you're lucky, he can tell you all about it.
just have your tent and camping equippment and a map and of course a telescope if you have any.

When you have a chance to roam around Jiddah, and to further destinations,go to Al Anbariyyah,
( this activity should be done with a large group of friends)and try the traditional dish( Fish and Sayadiyya) Jiddawi style :-)
Paper plate and plastic spoons will be ur tools to eat, unless you choose to eat with your hands and fingers :-)
It has a huge restaurant by the same name, which has rooms with carpets, a TV and a fan.You will have to dine while sitting on the floor.
The place also offers large play ground for kids.
