Luggage and bags: a small soft bag , as you have to carry your belongings with you. If you are staying longer after the hajj , then a suitcase is needed and is left in your accommodation in Mecca.
A money belt to be worn round the waist , for men; or under the abiyah for women. Thieves do exist , and in the crowds pickpockets can work easily.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Strong comfortable shoes that are easily removable are essential. Anything that could cause you to trip [like laces, or heels] could be fatal.
In winter it is cold , so have a warm jacket or sweater.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Basic medicines especially for colds and flu are needed. Every pilgrim catches a virus of some kind.
Perfumes , deodorants and scented soaps cannot be used when wearing the hajj clothing. Hair and nails cannot be cut until the day of the eid. Spots cannot be squeezed or hairs removed. A pair of scissors can be taken to clip the hair on the day of the Eid.
Make up is not permitted, nor is nail varnish or jewellery.
Photo Equipment: Photography is not allowed in the Holy Places, but a digital camera is good to have elsewhere. Make sure you have batteries.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Sleeping on mattresses on the ground is the norm. A light fleece blanket or sleeping bag is handy.
Miscellaneous: Women should have plenty underwear as washing facilities are not really available, and if you can rinse your clothes, there are few facilities for drying them, except the tent ropes. Disposable underwear would be ideal.
Apart from the abiyah and head covering, women should wear trousers and socks, especially when it is cold, and for decency.
