Visiting the Petroglyphs and Dunes West of Riyadh

Another place west of Riyadh features an outcrop of rocks with ancient petroglyphs. The artwork provides images of animals once common but long since extinct in the region. Near the petroglyphs are some excellent sand dunes. This is off the highway an hour or so west of Riyadh. We camped in the area, away from the dunes. Exact driving instructions will require help from another expat once you arrive in the city. Actually to get to the petroglyphs a 4x4 isn't exactly necessary, although I'd convoy with one. The entrance is an unpaved but flat road grazed on either side by camels. And for those 4x4 SUVs planning to ply the dunes, don't do it alone! Even 4x4 vehicles can get stuck.

Janadriya is an annual fair of sorts that brings together culture from all over Saudi Arabia. I can't describe everything, but there are traditional houses from Asir provence, traditional boats, crafts, food, camel races, music & traditional sword dance, and games for the children. Men and children can go anytime, but women must attend on "family" days, which will then exclude single men, I believe. I was invited by a couple of my Saudi students who dressed in western style clothing for the occasion. Monsur and Abdullah are shown in some photos. Great guys and more helpful toward appreciating the Saudi culture than the mock dates and tea ceremonies put on at the residential compounds.

  • Directions: Ask around the work place. Somebody will know how to get there. I believe it takes place in winter.

In the numerous trips to the Petroglyphs or Canyonland areas, one passes grazing camels. These animals can be quite large, and in colors ranging from white to black. They are intelligent animals that are usually quite friendly, but not particularly interested in the visitor. Camels don't bread naturally and need the help of their caretakers to do so.

  • Diplomatic quarter is located in the northwest of Riyadh which more than 90 foreign embassies should be found and so many international organizations, gardens, sports facilities and housings are here.

We first visited this place when we had our interview in US embassy to get a US visa we’ve been lucky to visit this place for the first time and so we’ve been lucky we passed our interview.

DQ have become one of the kingdom's most precious urban resources and perhaps Saudi Arabia's most accomplished work of green architecture. As I have seen about the place is perfect the atmosphere is different compared in city center.

With about what I read and researched DQ's perimeter, measuring almost 22 kilometers (7.2 miles) in circumference.

  • Address: Diplomatic Quarter
  • Directions: King Khaled Road to the north-west of Riyadh city

    Janadriya, Part II
  • Tip Rating:
  • I didn't see the camel races, but I did see a Falconier and his birds. I also enjoyed the drums and sword dance. The Saudi culture is not so festive and colorful as many others on the planet, but for those living and working in Riyadh, this activity is quite worthwhile.

Camping in the Desert Canyon Lands
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the winter months, taking a 4x4 into the canyon land areas west of Riyadh provides some relief from urban chaos. We would gather together a group of interested people and several 4x4 vehicles. One time teachers from the American School and ourselves celebrated Thanksgiving in the Canyon Lands. Traveling time is about an hour on the highway until an exit empties onto an unpaved road. As the road winds up and over a saddle, rock formations tower above. The road becomes increasingly rough and eventually we are required to shift into 4 wheel drive. In the general valley where we often went, there might be another group in the canyon, and so we would drive on until we found a box canyon all to ourselves. In this area, we rarely found even a goat herdsman with his flock. The moonscape of rubble furnished very little to feed even in winter, but we had to careful where we pitched the tent. A thunderstorm could easily produce a flash flood through out camp. See the tips on shopping for camping gear and where to buy it. This is a good family trip.

    Enjoy the Road
  • Tip Rating:
  • The roads of Riyadh are one of the best assets of the City. The widest roads I’ve ever seen in my whole life, mostly of the roads has a 4 lanes where any vehicles are very comfortable to drive.

How I wish women should be given a freedom to drive on these wide roads someday.

    Riyadh Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • I just visited this place with my father couple of days back and it really was a wonderful experience. The themes in which it is presented is really superb. It starts from How earth came into being and then articles from different civilizations dated back several hundred BC and then days before islam and how it spread in different regimes and then about Ottoman's empire (although I would have loved to see more info on it) and then how Abdul Aziz captured(reunited) and thus came into this world a country called Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The best thing which I liked about it is that they have english translation as well which is very useful for expats like us.

Do also visit Murabba Palace. Its a stunning architectural monument, opened in 1999, built To celebrate the centenary of Saudi Unification.

It really is a well planned and well maintained place ...... definately worth a visit !!! seriously I didnt expect it to be that good :)

Costs per person: 15 SR (4 USD)
