 | Saudi Arabia Shopping | Tips 1 - 10 of 17 | | OK this is not really a tip as such but it is an interesting point that I noticed here when I first came to Saudia especially as a woman... there are no Sales ladies in the Retail shops! In fact at first it was a bit strange being served by a man especially when it concerned 'feminine things' such as clothes, lingerie, makeup, etc... but I soon got used to it. These guys are trained well and after awhile I did start to get used to it as some of them became friends of mine after being in the Kingdom awhile. Many of these people are expats too and come from many different countries such as Egypt, Syria, India, Lebanon, Yemen, etc... etc... I guess when I eventually do settle back into my home country (New Zealand) again it will feel strange being served by a female and a male together again.
There are all sorts of little knick knacks that you can purchase here, I myself have taken a shine to the coffee and enjoy drinking the Arabic coffee which is flavoured with Cardamon, it is usually served in tiny little cups with no handles and is green. Sometimes it can be very bitter and not nice, usually depending on how it is made it is quite refreshing. I also enjoy sweetened Turkish coffee which looks like mud and is drunk without milk again this can be nice with a hint of cardamon. A smoking pipe otherwise known as a "Sheesha" or "Hubbly Bubbly" makes a nice gift for someone back home. It is a tall contraption which water is usually placed at the bottom and hot coals at the top. These things can be found throughout the Middle East and usually have flavours from fruit peelings such as apples or grapes. The Carpets here are something else, like Gold you really need to know what to look for in a carpet and if you are a little unsure like me it is best to take someone with you who knows a bit about them. The prices can range from 1000 riyals (about $250 U.S dollars) upwards.
Remember everything here can be bargained for except for food and drink! Ramadan Sales are the best!! Leave a Comment Theme: Women's Clothes

Remember how I told you all about the various different shops that are here in Saudi Arabia? Well many of them are from different countries such as the UK, America, some stock items from India and many other countries. Here is a wee International Guide that you can use when you go out Shopping for Clothes. It saves you the worry about thinking Will this fit me? A word to the wise, there are very little if not any Changing rooms in some of the Clothes shops here in Al Khobar. But if you ask nicely the shop keeper may allow you to try the items on in one of the nearby toliets to make sure it does fit. Some may also allow you to take it home (but you must buy it first) and then take it back if it does not fit.

Any of the beautiful yet glamourous Gold Souks here in Saudi Arabia.
Gold, Silver, White Gold, Diamonds etc... etc... Check out the local Gold rate before you go out and look in newspapers such as Arab News or Riyadh Daily ( which are both written in English). Keep this figure in mind when you enter the shop, and then ask the shop assistant what their gold rate is for today. If it is higher than what you have read, you can tell him what you saw in the paper. Another tip to remember is that you are paying for only the weight of the gold not the workmanship that has gone into making it. If the seller mentions the workmanship, he is wrong and you shouldn't have to pay for this. If he is negiotable you can then beat that price (especially when you are interested in purchasing more than one piece of jewellery) keep with that price or go to the next shop... there are plenty of them around. And you don't need to buy the first time either! The other idea is to take a Muslim friend with you especially if you are like me and have European styled features. When I took my Muslim friend into the shop he was able to bargain much better for the Gold than what I could ever do and I ended up getting a better deal. The address below is where I purchased my first lot of gold, which consisted of a nice 18ct gold simple knotted necklace and two 18ct gold charms for my charm bracelet- A reasonable sized camel and an Arabian coffee pot all for 280 riyals!!!! which works out to be approximately $140.00 (NZD) $74.00 (USD) on today's market. For more of an accurate currency rate go to http://www.xe.com
Always check the local Gold rate before you go out (see above). Leave a Comment Theme: JewelryAddress: Al-Mulhim Jewellery Palace- Prince Mohammed StreetPhone: 8982851Directions: Downtown, Al Khobar Their main office is in Al Ahsa in Al Hofoof. Phone 5866644 under the same name.

Probably the largest selection of English books. Also a great place to get your computer and IT gear. They do toys too. So something for all the family.
The Riyadh Today and Jeddah Today guides are similar to Yellow Pages. They list a number of companies and service providers. The most valuable part of the guide is the section on Compounds. The book also has sections on places to see and visit, overview of the city, overview of some of the red tap (Iqama processing, Driving licence processing etc).
Fixed price of 20 SAR I believe. I can't remember now! But well worth every halalah you spent.
