Mall of Dhaharan: Western Style Mall Shopping

by american_tourister

A nice western style respite from the normal haggle fest you run into in a regular store here. It is a full mall and has an awesome food court and a giant grocery stor but alas most of the shops are high end boutique types that have nothing you really want to but. Groceries and a Hardee's artery buster burger. You can buy expensive jewelry and dresses that no woman will wear in public in Saudi Arabia. You can have a cinnamon roll, some cuban cigars, a Debenham's suit fitting and buy a car. Leave room for Ice Skating though! About the same as in the USA. The Riyal is fixed to the US Dollar so it does not rise and fall invalue to Americans.

Jarir or any Bookstore: Must have guide for Riyadh and Jeddah

by katcoota

Probably the largest selection of English books. Also a great place to get your computer and IT gear. They do toys too. So something for all the family. The Riyadh Today and Jeddah Today guides are similar to Yellow Pages. They list a number of companies and service providers. The most valuable part of the guide is the section on Compounds. The book also has sections on places to see and visit, overview of the city, overview of some of the red tap (Iqama processing, Driving licence processing etc). Fixed price of 20 SAR I believe. I can't remember now! But well worth every halalah you spent.

Shopping malls: Luxury shops

by iwys

Saudi cities have some of the most luxurious shopping malls in the world. No expense has been spared in making these air-conditioned, shopping dreamworlds. There are fountains, marble walls etc. Car parking is always free too. The one shown in the picture is Galleria in Al Khobar.

Tamimi Markets: Arab Sweets

by iwys

Arab sweets are actually small pastries, usually soaked in sweet syrup. They are VERY sweet and stcky. Saudi ladies seem to like them a lot.One of the most popular sweets is Baklava, which consists of crushed nuts, in fyllo pastry, soaked in syrup. Another favourite is Kunafa, which is made from pastry and whipped cream or cream cheese, also soaked in syrup. They are on sale in specialist sweet shops, such as Tripoli Sweets, as well as in most supermarkets.
