An akh

by arabian10

An akh ("brother"), a member of the Ikhwan, settled by Ibn Saud after 1912. the Ikhwan emulated the Prophet in their daily lives, and dressed distinctively, with short robes and headbands instead of the usual 'iqal'. There were many Ikhwan settlements in Najd and eastern Arabia. (Cheesman 1923 - 24).

Arabia old photo

by arabian10

Uyun al-Jawa, a small oasis settlement in the north of al Qasim which was unwalled unusually for a Najdi town. The circular tower, which sometimes served as a minaret also, used to be a typical feature of al-Qasim's landscape. (Leachman 1912)

The oasis and town of Marat in al-Washm, a prosperous region of Lower Najd with its chief town at Shaqra, between Riyadh and al-Qasim. A typical Najdi settlement, both town and gardens were walled. (Thesiger 1945)

Visit Ras Tanura On The Persian Gulf

by clws

Ras Tanura is the home of Saudi Aramco's Ras Tanura oil refinery, which is the world's largest petroleum port. It is located in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Ras Tanura is north of Dhahran. From Ras Tanura you can see beautiful views of the Persian Gulf. Saudi Aramco's employees are lucky enough to have access to a beautiful beach here that is equipped with picnic tables, grills, and open showers, for spraying of the sand and salt water. The conviences of having the dining hall, snack bar, and Cafe Najjar just footsteps away, is an added perk as well!

Take a Ride On A Camel

by clws

You will find that there are plenty of opportunities to ride camels here in Saudi Arabia. Usually during some of the EID celebrations, festivals, etc. We were lucky enough to be out in the desert digging for desert sand roses, when some very friendly Bedoins stopped by where we were at, and offered to let our children ride on their camel! They were also nice enough to allow us to take many pictures, that we will treasure for years to come.

Buried Treasures'............Desert Sand Roses!

by clws

Like snowflakes, every desert sand rose is unique. No two are alike. You can find them in single rosettes, or in clusters. Desert Sand roses are formed when brine rich water from the arabian gulf seeps underground and chemically concentrates the calcium sulfate which then crystallizes into the mineral gypsum. As the water evaporates and deposits over the years, the gypsum crystals grow in the pore spaces enclosing the surrounding loose sand. The result is desert sand roses. We have gone out once and dug for some of these amazing works of nature and really enjoyed doing so. This is something we look forward to doing again!

History of al-Ula and Mada'in Salih

by Manyana

They are historically and geographically connected towns. Mada'in Salih is believed to be where Prophet Salih and his Thamudian people lived in while historians believe that Nabateans settled down in this area and occupied all the way up to Petra in Jordan. That what explains how similar architecture is in MS and Petra. MS is well-known for its well-decorated tombs that are carved into mountains at the same time there is no evidence if any house was built in that area. On the other hand, MS is connected to al-Ula which is the doorway for tourists to enter Mada'in Salih. It is a small town, 25-minute jounrey to the touristic spot of Mada'in Salih. It also goes back to be built hundreds years ago and different civilizations were established on its land. These two spots are located in the middle northern region of Saudi Arabia. It is hilly, fertile and show termprature extremes in winter and...

Khaybar: Residence of Arab Jews

by Manyana

Khaybar took its name from the Jewish tribe 'Khaybar'.It's a small town located in Mintaqat al Madina al Munawara where Arab Jews used to settle 1400 years ago, 2 hours and half north to Medina. Arab Jews used to live in Medina and Khaybar and other surrounding areas. But Medina was their center. When Islam entered the Arabian Peninsula, Muslims came to agreement with Jews to defend Medina against any enemy. But Jews broke this agreement so Muslims got the expelled to Khaybar. This historical sightseeing has got a castle of the Jewish tribe's head, a graveyard of Jews and other spots to visit. It's also a fertile land, rich of palms and agriculture activity.Very interesting. To check what to see, click here please
