The Wahba Crater

by majed81

The geologists have theorized that a rising volcano hit a body of water. The result was a massive explosion which ended up with this big hole in the ground. On one side of the crater lies an ash cone which is all that is left of the volcano. It is about a mile wide.

Riyadh - Musmak Fort and old suq

by zuhur

In the former downtown of old Riyadh is the Musmak Fort - this was occupied by the Rashid family and Ibn Saud captured it in 1902 - at the beginning of his campaign to take over Arabia. The fort has been restored and has several video segments that give details of Ibn Saud's campaign - also cases with weapons of the period and details about the the use of the Fort and its living spaces.Just in front is a plaza where qisas punishments were (are?) enacted - somewhat gruesome feeling for me. And off to the side of the Fort is part of the older suq area - this section has men's clothing, incense and gold jewelery - but as my guide explained, it is diminishing in importance as most folks now shop in the malls.

Ad-Diriyya - Ruins of the first Sa'ud city

by zuhur

Not too far from Riyadh are the ruins of Ad-Diriyya. These are mud-brick palaces of the Saudi family, but date back to the first kingdom. This center was attacked by the Ottomans and is simply full of history. The ruins are partially rebuilt and reconstructed; there was another section of the city where reconstruction not yet begun. Anyway, you can get idea of what life was like; there are courtyards for the horses (and camels, I suppose) and the palaces are on high ground; the better to see the enemy. Thick walls keep it cooler inside - also one building was a hammam - pipes heated by rock ran underneath.

Jinadriyya Festival

by zuhur

The Jinadriyya Festival is unique in the Kingdom as the only national, cultural festival & it allows the visitor to see the arts, crafts, dress, and dances of different regions of Saudi Arabia. Terrible traffic getting into it & parking -- held about the same time each year - so I was lucky enough through a Saudi friend and kind, kind Naima at the US Embassy to obtain a ticket for the first day the Festival was open to women (only. Well, that meant that there were mutawa'in at the end of the parking lot and sure enough they gave a member of our party -- who did not have an abaya - a very hostile non-welcome. She ignored them and we told them that she'd get an abaya inside. Don't do that if you go. Just wear a really long skirt (I"m tall and mine doesn't come down to my feet so they yelled in their nasty way at me on return) your abaya, your headcover & keep your cool. Lots of crowding on...

Ad Diriyah

by iwys

The mud-walled oasis town of Ad Diriyah is one of the few surviving traditional Arab towns in the centre of Saudi Arabia. It is an easy day trip from Riyadh. It overlooks Wadi Hanifah, with its clusters of date palm trees. This was once the home of Ibn Abdul Wahab, founder of the Wahhabi sect. The government relocated the last reamaining inhabitants to modern apartment blocks in Riyadh before the end of the 20th century.

Wildlife in Asir

by iwys

The Asir region, near Yemen, is the best area in Saudi Arabia for seeing wildlife. There are leopards, but you are unlikely to see them. You will, however, see plenty of Arabian baboons. Don't eat near them, or they will steal your food.I saw more than 100 species of birds in one weekend in April. At the summit of Jebel Sawdah, the highest mountain in Saudi Arabia, you will see the only Asir Magpies in the world. There are about 200 left. Other birds, you should see include, Bruce's Green Pigeon, Nile Valley and Palestine Sunbirds, Tristram's Grackles and Arabian Woodpeckers. There is a great variety of habitats, ranging from stunted juniper forests to the sun-baked coastal plain of the Tihama.

OK so there is no Nightlife...

by shelnlin

OK so there is no Nightlife here, get out whenever you can and do the simple things such as having a cup of coffee at a Cafe. I don't know why but for some reason I enjoy people watching and watching the way people behave and act from a distance. Here is a perfect way to kill your time when you aren't working or are having a day off. It is quite interesting see the woman who love to shop bargain with the shop keeper for the lowest rate (remember practically anything here comes with a discount unless it is food) and the men are into it as well. The culture is unique and the people that I have come into contact with have more than willing to please me. As a female here, at times I feel very safe and are treated with usually the upmost respect. Knowing a little bit of the Arabic language has helped me too and I have found this has been a blessing especially when dealing with retailers.Enjoy...

Desert Roses

by SheNiteOwl

An Arabian legend claims that Allah blesses the person who finds a Desert Rose with good luck. What are Desert Roses? In Saudi Arabia Desert Roses are found in the flat brine-rich Sabkhas (desert areas) which are prevalent in the Eastern Province. A Desert Rose is made of gypsum crystals in connection with sand that crystallizes in a unique rosette growth pattern. Such crystals are formed when high tides bring seawater into the Sabkha and the water becomes cut-off from the sea and evaporates, eventually causing salt deposition and crystal formation. To find Desert Roses you must dig down one to three feet into the wet sand.
