SAPTCO- the Saudi Arabian Public Transport System is a wonderful bus service which allows the traveller to travel either domestically or internationally. They also make special trips for those who are performing Haj or Umrah and will also charter too.

For a round trip a person is entitled to a 25% discount on their fare around to get to most places. Check with your agent before you pay for your fare to see what is avaliable to you at the time.

I used SAPTCO during Ramadan and being a Christian, I had to wait patiently with my Muslim companions until the sun had set before we ate. This meal would have come out alot earlier had it not been Ramadan. SAPTCO's food I ate was light and fresh and not too heavy on the stomach.

The chairs on board were comfortable and spacious and one could relax quite comfortably particularly on a long journey. There was also a table avaliable for one to read a book, newspaper or play a game.

The buses themselves were in good order and very tidy. The little toliet area was clean also. Everything appeared to well maintained and clean. Some buses around the world can be rather filthy and the toliets look like they have never ever seen a bottle of disinfectant in their life. But SAPTCO was spotless.

SAPTCO has a wonderful easy to use website for further information on prices, timetables and a little about the company.

    Where to find them?
    Everywhere and anytime.

    How to reach them?
Simply Scream TAXI or point by your hand they will stop for you.
Eye contact is enough to stop them.

    Who can ride them?
    Both males and females.

    How much to pay them?
I remember 10 minute of diving he took about 15 riyals. Just bargain and he might low the price.
    SR3.75 to U.S. $1.00.
Taxi drivers are very friendly and mostly from South East Asia + Saudis.

    Unfortunately their driving mostly horrible.

driving in saudi arabia is dangerous, thosands of people die each year due to car accidents, and guess what, that's not because saudis are drunk!!! now i wonder what then will happen if drinking is allowed in saudi arabia.

saudi arabia is well connected with highways and roads between its villages and cities, and driving is the main transportation method used here

For anyone who is planning to live or is living in Al Khobar in the Eastern Province, one should only pay 10 riyals to go into town etc... when using one of the White taxis. Anymore than 10 riyals and you have given your driver a nice healthy tip... unless you really want to that is. State you price prior to jumping into the vehicle and if he objects flag down another man until you find one.

Certainly trips that a little bit further than say 10-15kms may want a bit more so if that is the case negiotate around the 15 riyal mark.

Some drivers speak very little English so be prepared to speak slowly and carefully to them so they get your destination right, and if possible get directions to your destination prior to leaving and show the driver so he knows where to go.

Some of these guys drive like maniac's trying to out do one another so make sure that you have your seatbelt on at all times, as they do have a habit of breaking quickly. Others will drive 'normally' and they are the ones who sometimes speak better English too (not always but sometimes...)

    Safe travels!

  • Women are (still)not allowed to drive, yet I don`t find it a very bad thing as the media tries to make it,,Who wouldn`t love to have a personal driver??to drive you any place you want to go??hehehe I guess this is a part of spoiling us women in Saudi Arabia ;-)
Not allowing women to drive has nothing to do with Islam,it`s just a cultural thing here in Saudi, yet many women in the deserts drive their own cars all the time(LOL there are no policemen in the deserts to stop them).

  • by flight. i think there r some ferry services from egypt or sudan. lots of sudanese there so i assume they travel accross.
in jeddah or riyadh or dammam, cabs run everywhere. there r buses available too..but u have to really find your way out, coz its not very well organised. if u wanna travel to other cities...there r share-a-taxi things available and dont forget to bargain with the cab drivers.

  • Take a tour package, now that the country is opening a little to actual tourists. Individual travel is likely to be much more expensive and far less rewarding.

  • Air travel is safe. Many airlines fly into the country. I flew Lufthansa, very convenient.
You can rent a car for a reasonable rate. Taxis are available in the cities. I do not recall seeing a good public transport system.
