Omayyad Mosque: Impressive 1300+ Years Mosque
Damascus & Countryside:Landmarks of Old Damascus

The Omayyad Mosque

This Great Mosque stands at the heart of the Old city at the end of Souq al-Hamidiyeh. It was built by the Omayyad Caliph al-Walid ibn Abdul Malek in 705 A.D. when Damascus was the capital of the Arab Islamic Empire.
It was constructed on the site of what has always been a place of worship: first, a temple for Hadad, the Aramean god of the ancient Syrians three thousand years ago; then, a pagan temple (the temple of Jupiter the Damascene) during the Roman era. It was later turned into a church called John the Baptist when Christianity spread in the fourth century. Following the Islamic conquest in 635, Muslims and Christians agreed to partition it between them, and they began to perform their rituals side by side.

Omayyad Mosque: Minarets of the Omayyad Mosque
Historians have debated whether or not the Omayyad Mosque, in its earliest form, had four minarets. The current structure has only three dating from various periods. What is known, though, is that the existing two southern minarets (adjacent to the enclosed structure) were built over the bases of Roman towers that formed part of the Temenos. The northern side supposedly had two other Roman towers which were removed when the entire northern wall was rebuilt in the 12th century. The three existing minarets are: Tower of the Bride (9th - 12th centuries), Tower of Jesus (13th century with later Ottoman additions), and Western Tower (15th century Mamluke period).

In Roman times, a second monumental propylaeum stood on the eastern side of the temenos of the Temple of Jupiter. The Propylaeum towered above a staircase, adding to its grandeur. While the stairs leading up to the propylaeum remain, only the sides of the once impressive portal have survived. They form extensions to the gate now known as Bab Jairun leading into the Omayyad Mosque. The remains of the propylaeum preserve an arch and capitals of Corinthian columns. The walk east from the bottom of the staircase leads to the remains of another Roman monumental gate that marked the eastern entrance into the outer enclosure of the Temple of Jupiter.

Omayyad Mosque: A Great example of Islamic architecture.
The Omayyad Mosque is exactly that and it's a must see while in Damascus. For Muslims it is a pilgrimage sight (also the 4th holiest place in Islam) and you will usually find the mosque abuzz with activity as a lot of people are around to visit and spend time here. Tourists are required to enter through one specific gate after paying an entry fee. The gate is on the side where the Shrine of Saladin is located. Women are expected to wear a cloak if not already appropriately dressed and all visitors are required to remove their shoes and carry them around.

    Omayyad Mosque: Umayyad Mosque
This is my favourite site in Damascus. It is a place of worship since the 9th century BC, first for the Aramaeans, who built in this spot a temple to god Hadad and then of the Romans who converted it to a temple to god Jupiter. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, a basilica to John the Baptist replaced the temple. In AD 636, Muslims entered Damascus and the eastern part of the basilica was converted to a mosque, while Christians continued to use the western part as a church. Few years later, the Umayyad caliph Khaled Ibn Al-Walid decided to built a new mosque at this place, so he destroyed the old Roman and Byzantine construction and built a magnificent, grand mosque. Umayyad Mosque is in sanctity second only to the holy mosques of Mecca and Medina. Tourists enter the mosque through Bab al-Amara at the north. Women have to wear a long robe, which is provided to them at the ticket office. Taking photographs is permitted.
Admission 50SP. Open daily from dawn until after sundown prayers, closed 12.30-2pm Friday for noon prayers.

This is one of the most impressive mosques on the planet.
Originally a Christian cathedral until 705 when the Caliph flattened the site. Over the next 10 years the impressive mosque was built. The head of John the Baptist is meant to be in a tomb here.
For tourists there is a small fee to pay. There are robes they will supply you with to cover your legs, and if female your head as well.
