It is true that Damascus –and Syria in general- is really a very safe place. People are friendly and hospitable and if you express a common sense, you’ll never have any problem. I never felt unsafe and although I could speak only two or three Arabic words, people were always willing to help me. The only “danger” as other Vters have said, is the taxi drivers: always ready to overcharge and cheat you and never have a taximeter or small change. The best way to deal with them is to avoid using a taxi, but if you have to, then discuss the price beforehand and keep in mind that a simple cross-town ride costs around 30SP. Leave a Comment

One of the major problems in Damascus was the lack of information in other language than Arabic. We try to visit the city without a guide, what is not difficult, taking a taxi in some points and walking. But it is hard to understand what you are seeing if there isn’t written information. So buy a good guide book …

There is an amusment park in Damascus on the road to the airport called Happy Land. I was talked into visiting it with some friends of mine. It is similar to a traveling carnival with rides that look like they are about to fall apart. Against my better judgment (where was it?!) I went on some of these rides and realized the hard way that the same safety standards and laws do not exist in all countries. Beware, it is a dangerous place with an untrained staff and I wouldn't take children (or adults) there. There is the possibility for serious injury, as I realized. It wasn't exactly cheap either and the first aid is a joke. Leave a Comment

When taking taxis try to have a good idea of how much it costs to get to where you are going and agree on the price beforehand, or ask them to turn on their meter. If you don't discuss the price before they will likely try to charge you much more than you were expecting. Also, try to have as much change/coins/small bills as possible. If you give them a larger bill expecting change back (even with a meter) they will often take their own tip out of your change and refuse to give you the rest. Also, try to have a general idea of the city layout so that if using a meter - the driver doesn't take the long way around to charge you more. Watch out for rush hour - often walking is faster and of course cheaper. Leave a Comment
