Considered Syria's most beautiful hammam (Arab bath), the 16th century Hammam al-Nasri continues to function to this day. It is distinguishable by the yellow dome and its façade's alternating yellow and black stones. A recent successful restoration has made this hammam most popular, particularly among tourists. It also opens for women twice a week.

Hammam al-Nahasin, or Bathhouse of the Coppersmiths, is in the oldest part of Aleppo's covered souk, and dates back to the early thirteenth century. It was restored in 1985. It is now one of the most luxurious hammams in Aleppo, with a circular steam room under a domed roof.

There has been a bath on this site for a very long time but the building standing there today is from the 14th century. During the 1980s it was restored by the Ministry of Tourism. It is situated below the citadel, to the southeast. As you approach you will recognise it by its striped facade in black and light yellow.
The evening Firas and I passed it was open for men so I was surprised I could enter to have a look. I’m glad they let us in because it is a beautiful building and one day I’d like to go here for a bath (and so I did in June 2005).

This Hammam is famed for being the best in Syria, and although I can’t verify it because I didn’t visit all the Hammams in Syria, I ensure you that visiting Hammam Yalbougha an-Nasry (although I know it is a bit touristy) was one of the highlights of my visit in Aleppo. Not only because I really enjoyed being scrubbed and massaged, but also because I had the change to see women of all ages having fun, away of the strict rules that dominate their everyday lives. Hammam Yalbougha an-Nasry was constructed in 1491, destroyed and rebuilt several times during the years and finally restored and reopened to the public in the mid 80s. Looking like every typical Mamluk building from the outside, it is marvellous inside. The full package includes the entry, scrubbing and massage and costs 450SP. Open 10-2am, women’s day 10am-5pm on Monday-Thursday and Saturday.

The 2nd choice of hamman in Aleppo. Sauna and bath only cost SYP250. This place has more local and not so luxurious. In fact, inside is quite primitive. If you only have time for one hammam, Hammam Yalbougha an-Nasry should be the choice, not this one.
It locates in the souq, south of the Great Mosque.

Do visit the hammam near the citidel during the women's hours. Only SP400 for the works and none of the dodgy men masquerading as masseurs as in some Turkish hammams.....
Beautiful old restored building and very peaceful - inhibitions have to be put to one side but foreigners can leave bikini bottoms on if they feel more comfy

This is another hammam... one of the most famous ones in Syria - and surely the most famous one in Aleppo. The good news is that it has different opening times for women and for men, so everyone can just drop by and visit it. Inside it's truly lavish and "historical", as it dates back to the 15th century. From then until now it has changed and been repaired/rebuilt several times - but the old charm is still there. Some practical info:
Ladies: Saturday, Monday, Thursday, Wednesday (winter only). 9 am - 5 pm
Men: Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, Wednesday (summer only) 10 am - 1.30 am
Entrance is 200 SP, massage 100, rubbing 50, soap 25, loof 15 and drinks 25 (basically 415 SP in total)

Visiting the hammam el Nahasin requires a bit of luck, if you are a woman. I just happened to pass by, looked inside from the door, saw a nice (modern) pine-wood interior with with red caprtes and cushions... and wondered if I could go inside. Luck was on my side: it's a men-only hammam but, as no one was using it at the moment - the man at the entrance let me wander around and take a few pics. I could only see the rest area (cold room?) but I really found it fascinating. The official sign outside claims that the original hammam was built in the 13th century!
