the souq.. the wonderful charming souq! Not a very touristic one... actually very little touristic generally speaking, and a great place to wander around for hours and hours. The Aleppo souq is huge, and i don't know how many kilometres, but many anyway... most of it is covered too, and like any other souq is divinded into "areas" selling different things: shoes, fabrics, wool, nuts, spices, veggies, carpets, jewellery... anything you may want or need. It's a delight to the eyes, and to the smell: so many new smells, so many forgotten smells, so many familiar smells... and so many cute donkeys! The thirteenth century Bab Antakya, or Antioch Gate, is the main entrance to the covered souk and it was the western gate to the old, walled city of Aleppo. This was, for centuries, the gateway to Aleppo's main street, including the Roman decumanus. It is believed that a Roman triumphal arch once stood here. Leave a Comment

When you are in Aleppo, even if you are not buying anything (like me !); Do wander inside the huge Aleppo souqs or market-place. It is still the main commercial centre for people in Aleppo. Arguably almost anything you fancy could be found in here. People told me that little has changed for the last few hundred years & it does show as you look at the walls surrounding the shops. Parts of The Souqs are from the 13th century but what we see at present is largely from The Ottoman era (around 16th to 19th century ).MORE PHOTOS INSIDE THE SOUQS IN ALEPPO... Leave a Comment

Also referred to as Madrassa Badriya, al-Khwajah Mosque dates from early 13th century. It is located off the main east-west axis of the souk, close to Bab Antakya and around the corner from Khan al-Tutun as-Saghir. The narrow façade of the mosque is decorated with a beautiful high muqarna archway topped by a rather oversized, but elegant polygonal minaret. The crown of the minaret is supported by intricate muqarna work and a lone star of david decorates it halfway up. Unlike other ancient structures in Aleppo, this mosque has no sign posted outside, which made it rather difficult to identify, and none of my guide books even showed it. After some internet research, I finally found a description here, though the author had as much difficulty as I did in identifying it.

The souq in Aleppo is the best souq I have seen in the Middle East. We ended up buying so much here because of the high quality of the merchandise and simply the nice atmosphere of the souq. The other nice thing was that there was not much hassle here. If you don't want something, Syrians won't hound you until you buy it. However, you still need to be careful not to take the first price they give you as you still can be overcharged. Leave a Comment
