This now-dilapidated theological college used to be the 6th century Cathedral of St Helen upon whose gardens the Great Mosque (Al Jamaa al-Kebir) was built. It is said that for hundreds of years, the mosque and the cathedral stood side by side in harmony until in 1124 when Muslims, responding to the Crusades, raided the church and converted it to a madrassa (Islamic school). Today, the building is in a state of disrepair and badly needs restoration. The only remaining element of the cathedral is the prayer hall, which has been incorporated into the madrassa's design.

    souqs: the "normal" souq
  • Tip Rating:
  • the souq.. the wonderful charming souq! Not a very touristic one... actually very little touristic generally speaking, and a great place to wander around for hours and hours. The Aleppo souq is huge, and i don't know how many kilometres, but many anyway... most of it is covered too, and like any other souq is divinded into "areas" selling different things: shoes, fabrics, wool, nuts, spices, veggies, carpets, jewellery... anything you may want or need. It's a delight to the eyes, and to the smell: so many new smells, so many forgotten smells, so many familiar smells... and so many cute donkeys!

One thing I loved in the Middle East was spending hours hiding from the blistering heat in the souqs! The shops are so interesting - No M&S here...LOL....I adored the spice shops and the antique style shops.

    souqs: Bab Antakya
The thirteenth century Bab Antakya, or Antioch Gate, is the main entrance to the covered souk and it was the western gate to the old, walled city of Aleppo. This was, for centuries, the gateway to Aleppo's main street, including the Roman decumanus. It is believed that a Roman triumphal arch once stood here.

    souqs: Out From The Souqs...
Coming out from The Souqs, the sun was blindingly hot outside. The souqs were covered & we could get lost in them ! It's a good way to get lost I guess, if nobody harassing you buying anything. If they do, just bargain. The prices, as they say...are competetive.

When you are in Aleppo, even if you are not buying anything (like me !); Do wander inside the huge Aleppo souqs or market-place. It is still the main commercial centre for people in Aleppo. Arguably almost anything you fancy could be found in here. People told me that little has changed for the last few hundred years & it does show as you look at the walls surrounding the shops. Parts of The Souqs are from the 13th century but what we see at present is largely from The Ottoman era (around 16th to 19th century ).MORE PHOTOS INSIDE THE SOUQS IN ALEPPO...

    souqs: Khwajah Mosque
Also referred to as Madrassa Badriya, al-Khwajah Mosque dates from early 13th century. It is located off the main east-west axis of the souk, close to Bab Antakya and around the corner from Khan al-Tutun as-Saghir. The narrow façade of the mosque is decorated with a beautiful high muqarna archway topped by a rather oversized, but elegant polygonal minaret. The crown of the minaret is supported by intricate muqarna work and a lone star of david decorates it halfway up. Unlike other ancient structures in Aleppo, this mosque has no sign posted outside, which made it rather difficult to identify, and none of my guide books even showed it. After some internet research, I finally found a description here, though the author had as much difficulty as I did in identifying it.

The souq in Aleppo is the best souq I have seen in the Middle East. We ended up buying so much here because of the high quality of the merchandise and simply the nice atmosphere of the souq. The other nice thing was that there was not much hassle here. If you don't want something, Syrians won't hound you until you buy it. However, you still need to be careful not to take the first price they give you as you still can be overcharged.

    souqs: Madrassa Shazbakhtiyeh (or Shadbakhtiya)
Tucked away within the souks of Aleppo, this madrassa-mosque is hardly noticeable. A small entrance crowned with a medieval muqarna decorated arch gives way into an open courtyard with a lofty iwan and access to a prayer hall. Although now used solely as a mosque, the structure was originally built in 1193 AD as a madrassa (school). It is named after the Zenghid prince Jamal-ed-Din Shazbakht (hence the name), and is among the earliest surviving madrassas in Aleppo. It was prayer time when I visited, so I did not enter the prayer hall to see what's inside. However, I did notice two ancient black basalt columns and their bases lying on the ground in the courtyard - probably dating from the Hittite period (see attached photo). This mosque was probably built on the site of worship that had been reused multiple times since the Hittite period.
