Ma`arrat an Nu`man Things to Do
The 12th century mosque is a lesser attraction in the town. Just across the museum, loads of citizens can be seen piling in to perform their obligatory prayers.
The mosque was partially leveled in a 1170 BCE earthquake destroying the minaret which was later rebuilt.
The Mosaic Museum is the only real attraction in Ma'art an-Nu'aman. Many of the large mosaics are off limits to your cameras. I was able to capture a few while the guide was away. Had he caught me I would have been repremanded harshly.
The large mosaics were taken from what is now called the Byzantine Dead Cities. Most notably from Serjilla, Al-Bara, Ruweiha, Jerada, Bauda, Shinshira, and Mahardiyya. Impressive are the well preserved and protected peices of art. They are quite large in comparison to anything you'll find in Madaba, Jordan.
