Symphony

Favorite thing: From Assads statue on 14 Ramadan St, walk a direct line from his arse to the large cafe, take the street to the right of this cafe, follow it down and cross the busy road and continue one more block and on the right you should be able to hear music (Thursday evenings only) They will let you sit inside and listen. Its a great mix of traditional arabic instruments and violins and these young people are GOOD.

Portrait of the president

Favorite thing: Many streets in central Latakia is running north - south and west - east, making a grid pattern. On Sharia Baghdad and Sharia al-Mutanabi you'll find many cafes, restaurants and shops.

The portrait of president Bashar, or his father Assad (the former president), can be seen at many places, like along this street in Latakia.
The president's family comes from Latakia.

The Museum

Favorite thing: The entrance fee to the museum is 150 SP, which is quite a lot for the small collection.
The museum is housed in an old khan and has a few exhibition rooms. There are finds from nearby places like Ugarit, pottery, written tablets and cylindrical seals. There is also a room with modern paintings. In the garden there are sarcophagus and statues.

The Cornich

Favorite thing: The Corniche is a broad street running parallel to the shore and it is lined with palm trees. It goes past the museum and a park. But it is not running just by the waterfront as the area is a big port/harbour.

The Beach

Favorite thing: The only beach I visited in Syria is at Cote d'Azur de Cham. The entrance fee is 250 SP and you will then have acces to the nice beach the whole day.
There are sunbeds for everyone to use (but they all might be taken allready when you arrive).

This side of Syria I did not see last time I was here. It is so different from the more conservative areas.

Favorite thing: Summerdays can be very hot in Syria. How refreshing isn't it then to take a swim in the Mediterranean!
At Cote d'Azur de Cham there are jet skis and motorboats for hire, but you are only allowed to drive them outside the rope.
Swimming is safe inside the protected area.
