Walking is a favourite activity in Syria - apart from eating! And the Corniche is for both. It is a long wide street along the shore with restaurants, hotels and food stalls on one side and the port on the other. At times it is rather crowded with families herding toddlers or young people just hanging out eyeing each other. The down side of it is that Lattakia is Syria's main port and the view of the huge trade ships and the gigantic cranes as they un/load containers off them ruins the idyllic atmosphere. The waves lapping at the shore on a calm day is something quite remote here.
