Below are a few books I recommend reading prior to a trip to Syria:Syria - A Historical and Cultural Guide, by Warwick BallDamas - Miroir Brisé d'Un Orient Arabe (Éditions Autrement, Séries Monde)Monuments of Syria - An Historical Guide, by Ross BurnsSyria - A Selection of Reports, by Carol MillerDamascus - Hidden Treasures of the Old City, by Brigid Keenan (illustrated)Damascus - A History, by Ross Burns (a detailed historical account, recommended only for those passionate about the details)Aromas of Aleppo - The Legendary Cuisine of Syrian Jews, by Poopa Dweck (An excellent and comprehensive cookbook of Aleppine recipes. It also provides an interesting account of the history of the city and its Jewish population, along with its traditions).Construction of Power and Piety in Medieval Aleppo, by Yasser Tabbaa (Penn State Press). A big hard cover book, way too heavy to pack in your bag,...

Variable weather!

by crazyman2

It can be warm in March ----but it also rains alot! You have been warned! Also, guys, the wearing of shorts (apart from on the beach) is not really an option! Syrians and other visitors will expect you to wear full length trousers (pants to Americans!).It being a muslim country, women are expected to dress modestly.

Everyday essentials you can or can't buy in Syria

by midnight_mike

Syria is a great place to buy new shoes. A pair of shoes which cost $50 in the United States or Europe sells for less than $10 in Syria. So if you have any problems with your footwear, a cheap replacement can be easily found. You can easily find toothepaste and other toiletries throughout Syria, but you might want to bring your own if you are picky about quality. Most Syrians cannot afford imports, so you will only be likely to find local brands. Even if you can find Fuji film in Syria, the chances are good that it has been sitting on a shelf for a long time. Bring plenty of film from home in addition to an extra battery. Bring plenty of aspirin or any other type of medicine you might need while in Syria. If you cannot read Arabic script, you will not know what type of pills you are taking if you buy them from a pharmacy.

Don't forget your TP!!

I brought one bag for my stuff and an empty one packed in there for all my purchases. I went in winter (March) and definitely had a need for my thicker sweater...coats are a good idea. Toilet Paper or Tissues - a lot of facilities are not equipped with itAnti-diarrheal medicine - you never know how what you are eating will react in your bodyShampoo - a lot of budget hotels do not provide wide angle lenses - for the tight street shots

Dictionary, Student card,........

by al.ladin

Bring toilet stuff with you. To buy one roll of toilet roll only or one toilet soup is impossible. Normal is 4, 5 or more pcs. in a pack. Student cards (ISIC only).... students discounts are great......entrance fee are sometimes ten times lower for students (unfortunately this was not my case :-(Arabic dictionaryI think this is useful especially in eastern parts of Syria. The knowledge of English is rare here and you can fall in problems sometimes. Because of difficult pronunciation are handy names of villages and towns written in Arabic in some guidebooks.

Bring These !

Well, if you are backpacking, better carry compact luggages & the ones where you can put on your back. Must be sturdy. For me, I was wearing my leisure shoes. Of course after the trip ends, my shoes are tattered. Sure, bring a camera if you want to take photos. Bring a good tripod, a small one would do so that you can use the tripod in some rooms where the light is not strong... BUY LOTS OF MINERAL WATER !This is good when you want to walk around & can't find a good one that your lung would accept !Well, although you can easily buy the mineral water almost everywhere around Syria, in small towns & villages...but people advised me to be choosy of the kind of mineral water that I buy.So far, I don't have any problem on my side, but who knows to some of you !

Cool and comfortable

by TheWanderingCamel

Cool, comfortable clothing is essential . Be aware of local sensibilities, dress modestly - upper arms and legs covered - no sleeveless tops, shorts for men only. Loose clothing is much more comfortable if it's hot and, as the sun can be quite fierce, you'll need to cover up to protect youself. A scarf to cover the head in mosques, if more coverage is needed, it will be provided by the mosque authorities.Sensible shoes with a good grip are essential - rough and broken ground at sites and uneven city pavements can be a trap for the unwary. Trekking sandals are ideal - cool but well-fitting around the ankles.A hat with enough brim to keep the sun off the back of your neck. After early May, you are unlikely to need anything warm in the evenings, even in the desert, but a light shawl won't take up much room - these are for sale everywhere, so you might like to wait and buy one there - or...

Bring your swimmingsuit to the coast

by MalenaN

Latakia is a city by the Mediteranean sea and there are nice beaches, at least at Cote d'Azur de Cham.So you should defenitly bring your swimmingsuit, sunscreen and sunglasses.Latakia is less conservative then other parts of Syria and here it feels OK to wear a t-shirt even if you are travelling as a single female.
