Grand Mosque in Adana / Sabancı Camii Park

by lobopequeno

Should you have the opportunity to visit the Sabancı Mosque, possibly together with a Turkish friend or local person to get some additional info, and feel like digesting the impressions while having a stroll you should explore the extensive park next to the mosque. The area is ideal to stroll and you are likely to meet local Turks doing the same. It's an ideal spot for taking a deep breath before diving into the inner city hustle & bustle again. The mosque (turkish: camii) itself is said to host some thousand people and to be the largest in Turkey. It was opened in 1998 and has six impressive minarets with a height of almost 100 metres. You won't find many mosques with six minarest in Turkey. It is also called Sabancı mosque as it has been partly financed by one of Turkey's most influential families, the Sabancı family.

Central Park

by basak

Adana Central Park is the largest park of Adana. It is just near by Seyhan River. The Sabanci Merkez Mosque is built in this park. If you have limited time in Adana, i receommend you to spend most of your time in discovering Adana culinary. If you have some more time, you should visit Sabanci Merkez Mosque, archeological museum (if you are interested in antic history) and if you wish, you can spend some time wandering around the Adana Central Park and see very many different people in the park. All three are very close to each other.I recommend you to take tour with the Park-Train. It is designed for the children but grown-ups also enjoy it al lot.

Misis

by smeagol13

As an ancient town constructed by the Romans, Misis can be an attraction for a traveller. Especially the ancient bridge on the river Ceyhan has a great historical value.it is told that the prophet Lokman finds the formula of immortality, and he drops the letter into the river, from this bridge :)the local drink "Ayran" made up of yoghurt should be tasted in Misis, since the place is famous for its Ayran.

The Stone Bridge

by smeagol13

Built by the Romans, the stone bridge remains still, and also is used for about 20 centuries. the bridge is one of the ways of getting to the other side of the legendary river, Seyhan. It is recently restorated and vehicle traffic has been forbidden. The Stone Bridge is a "must see" for a traveler who passes through Adana.

The old Bazaars and Shops

by smeagol13

for especially those, who are interested in photography; the old city center may be a generous source of beautiful portraits. here in the old part of the city, one can see many a century old Ottoman houses, craftsmen working on traditional arts and works; tiny shops of clothes and copper tools and the narrow streets also can provide the traveller with so called exotic views.

The Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami)

by smeagol13

The Grand Mosque, was built in the first half of 17th century, by a local feudal lord of Ramazanogullari. It resembles the architectural style of Seljukides, and especially the gate and minaret (a tower for calls of prayer) of this mosque is worth seeing. In its outside garden, is the tomb of Ziya Pasa, who was an important Ottoman politician and poet.

The Central Mosque

by smeagol13

The largest of all mosques in Turkey was built in 20 years, and the construction ended in 1998, with the help of famous Turkish bourguoisse; Sakip Sabanci. It changed all the skyline of the city, and for most of the visitors; it is the major attraction of the city. On the other hand, the architecture of the mosque does not suggest much difference, so if you have seen the mosques in Ýstanbul or Edirne; it may be useless to have a look at the same (!) mosque again.

The Archeological Museum

by smeagol13

The trace of several civilizations can be seen here, in the city Museum. some sculptures and marble tombs from the Hittite, Hellenistic and Roman eras may be interesting.A visitor can also see some etnographical and cultural heritage of Turkish states, Seljukides and Ottomans in this museum. There is almost nothing to see in the "Ethnographical Museum", so it is enough to have a look at the Archeological museum to have a glimpse abput the Ancient history of the city in your mind.

Ethnography Museum

by ann500

Adana has a very nice little ethnography museum. Do understand that it is small, though. But I would recommend it if you are interested in culture. I'm not sure where it is located, but a guidebook should tell you.

EAT!!

by ann500

Adana has some of the very best food in Turkey, it is an agricultural area, so everything is always fresh and cheaper than other parts of the country. It has truly wonderful food and is famous for its Adana Kebabs - the "Adana Kebabs" made in other parts of the country pale in comparison to the real thing. Many Adana Turks are convinced that their city's food is the best of Turkey and scorn the inferior food of other regions (such as my in-laws and they may be right). If you are invited to dinner at someone's home, definitely go, you won't regret it! I get hungry just thinking about my in-laws BBQs. It's no wonder I always weigh more after a visit to them.Common things to drink with kebab meals (other than water, cola or beer) are of course, raki, the potent Turkish aniseed drink, ayran (a delicious cold drink of yogurt, a little salt and water - some foreigners like it, some don't. I...
