it is really -seriously- hot in Adana, in summers. many people who reside in Adana move into mountain towns or villages just because of this high temperature. you can feel comfortable if you're accustomed to this situation, or if you have travelled a hotter place like egypt.but it can be hard to force, for one wo comes from northern europe.
Adana has very congested, crazy traffic. I don't advise driving here if you are a foreigner, unless you are a very good driver with this type of driving experience and you have a good navigator. In some parts of the city you are constantly dodging other cars, trucks, tractors, pushcarts, scooters, motorcyles, horsecarts, bicycles and pedestrians, with traffic coming from all directions and lanes seem only to be a suggestion. It is mind-boggling and maddening. My husband is Turkish and an excellent driver, but he is always losing his temper when he drives in Adana, and he grew up there.
There is an American Air Base just a few minutes away from Adana. The air-base is called Incirlik. It is in use since 1954. It was used as the operational center of American and English air forces during 1991 Gulf War. However, Turkish parliament did not allowed Americans to use Incirlik during Iraqi occupation. Many American military members and their families live in the base. It was possible to see Americans everywhere in the city before Iraqi occupation but nowadays they are not going out of the base so often. Existence of American air-base is a danger for the whole city. It is one of the firt places to be bombed by the enemies of America during a war and this situation creates a tension in Adana on every international crisis since it is very very close the city.
Adana drivers and pedestrians are crazy. The drivers do not even bother to give a signal while changing lines or turning. The pedestrians have an incredible tendency to walk in middle of the street instead of using nice, wide, attractive-looking pavements !!!Please be very careful in the traffic and try staying calm. Never assume that people would obey the traffic rules and be alert all the time. Please remember that warm Adana people may become very aggressive on the traffic.
Adana is in the earthquake zone. There was a big earthuquake in the city on June27th, 1998. At that date i was in the city. It was really scary. I thought it was the biggest earthquake i would ever experience, but i lived Marmara Earhquake in 1999. After all, when you visit Turkey, you must keep in mind that it is in the earthquake zone and unfortounately, it is not as well-prepeared to disasters as it should be. During Adana earthquake in 1998, some old buildings in the old-city center and some shanty houses were ruined. We had very much scared and there was a panic in the modern part of the city as well, but there were not serious damages.
When the Turks warn you of their "snakes", don't worry, their word for mosquito is pronounced "snake".These are tiny sandfly sized black mosquitoes who don't know when to go to bed.My wife and i ended up with bights on all parts of our unprotected body.Take or buy before your first night), a few bottles of insect repellant.It will drive you crazy and can make you sick.I was down with a fever of 39.6 after 2 nights suspected to be an allergy for their bight.The mosquitoes seem to be even more friendly than the locals.
