Mount Ararat Things to Do

You can do the climb in three, four or five days, if you want. It's not technical, there are no vertical sections, but it can get cold, snowy and icy, so pack like you're climbing high. It's a pretty mountain, rocky with green in between, until you get up higher when the green gives out and rocks, then snow, take over.

One of the other great things to do on Agri, as with any mountain, is to disconnect. Satellite phones may work, but this is a great place to forget about everything and focus on the mountain. Focus on the world around you. Night is a great time to do this. Stillness, tranquility. We watch TV shows about nature and the world around us, yet rarely do we get out in it and just be. The way those shows are made, the way stunning video is captured, is by sitting patiently in nature and waiting. (That plus guides, fixers and luck). The point is, while nothing may happen that is earth-shattering, simply being on the side of a mountain is experience enough.

It's quite a romantic place, Agri is. Rain sweeping down in the valley, rocks dotting a field with short, soft grass underfoot, and shepherds with their flocks. While there aren't rock bands and bars, there is the calm, quiet serenity of a mountainside encampment, a bonfire, stories and song.

No, Agri isn't known for its romantic nature, but the climb isn't too difficult and the effort, done with one's partner, is worth sharing- and will be remembered.

Mount Ararat Transportation

... and we didn't suffocate! That's the good news, and, considering the gear on top was lashed to the bumper... well, there's no bad news. Aside from cramped quarters in the back (we're not small guys) and the fumes, it was a pleasant ride to the mountain. This is one guide's transport. I don't know about the others. But, it fit the area- it was honestly much better than taking a limo.
