Snowy day at Esenboga Airport by Profsmiley Esenboga Airport is small and quite disappointing for a capital city of a country as big as Türkiye. There is a new airport construction site next to the present one, however as of January 2005, this is still in its beginning stages... Most international flights are via Istanbul. There are internal flights that are operated by Turkish Airlines and some other charter companies. There are some direct international flights by Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa to/from Germany, also by Cyprus Turkish Airlines to/from North Cyprus, and sometimes to/from UK. The airport is 27 km (app. 16 miles) from the city centre. You can easily take a taxi-cab, or you don't want to save the 'fare', there is a regular Havas bus that would take you to the main bus or the railway station. The airport is very small for a capital city. There is an entry visa (EUR15 for EU passports) which must be paid in cash! There is no business lounge airside, so don't arrive early and expect to get some work done. A taxi to/from the airport costs abut EUR 35. It is about half an hour to town. 33 km north of the city international code ESB. Reasonable web page in Turkish and English, with airport services on it. Arrivals and departures board is useful also the map of Ankara and a brief history, under guide to Ankara. Leave a Comment

Ankara Esenboga International Airport always reflects Turkish dynamism, modernism and hospitality. Ankara has also good motorway connections with most of the cities of Turkey. But I recommend you air travel for its safety and efficiency. Leave a Comment

Centrally located in Anatolia, Ankara is about 350 kilometers to the southeast of Istanbul. It took us 6 hours to get Ankara from Istanbul by bus (including an hour for a dinner). The road E80 was quite good. The guide told us that after constructing a new tunnel the road became shorter for an hour. by MalenaN Ankara otogar is called ASTI or Terminal and it is huge. As you arrive you should ask for a service to the area you want to go to as many companies have free transport from ASTI. One of the boys working on the bus I arrived with walked with me to show me the right place for the service, as it was not next to where the bus arrived. The service then took me all the way to my hotel in Ulus. Leaving Ankara I arrived to ASTI without having a ticket in advance. It can be a difficult choise where to turn as there are more then 100 ticket counters. As I was going to Bogazkale I did what my guidebook suggested. To be sure not to be dropped on the highwy outside Sungurlu I went to ticketcounter 37 and bought a ticket with Hattusas buscompany. To go to ASTI I took a dolmush from Ulus. It was not leaving from Ulus Meydani but from a small street somewhere close. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

After visiting the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations we went to Anitkabir by bus. I've taken a video of Ankara's street scenes out of a bus window. You may watch my 1 min 44 sec VIDEO-Clip Istanbul-Ankara by bus with Ankarali Coscun music. Theme: Bus

by MalenaN I bought a ticket from the buscompany Hattusas as I arrived at the otogar. The busticket was 8 000 000 TL and the busride to Sungurlu took 3,5 hours. The bus left less then half an hour after I bought the ticket. Comming to the otogar you will have a big chance to find a bus to your destination without to long waitingtime. The minibus to Kiranköy is 400 000 TL. In Kiranköy there are several buscompanies that have offices. I bought a ticket with Güven bus company for only 5 000 000 TL. There was a service pickup from the office to the otogar. Arriving in Ankara the service (didn't cost anything extra) then took me just next to my hotel. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Ankara has a good undergound train/Metro system. It's not yet too extensive, but it's growing and it's excellent where it is. It offers very good coverage in the core of the city, with stops at the main core centres of the city, Ulus, Sihhiye, and Kizilay, as well as a stop right near the main entrance to Anitkabir. The two extisting lines, confusingly one being called Metro and the other Ankaray, meet at Kizilay. They also allow one to head out to various other locations and some suburbs. Unfortunately, one must still make a longish walk or take a taxi in order to get to Museum of Anatolian Civiliations or the Citadel area. Leave a Comment Theme: Subway/Metro
