CULTURE, ART AND ENTERTAINMENT Ankara is not only the political capital of the country but the cultural and art capital as well. Residents of the capital city take advantage of the opportunities afforded them by the State Theater, private and amateur theaters, the State Opera and Ballet, the Presidential Symphonic Orchestra, the State Painting and Sculpture Museum and the many art galleries, cultural centers and amateur music groups. For over 50 years, the State Theater of the Turkish Republic has not only performed the best plays in the world, it has also nurtured an informed following with very refined tastes. The Turkish Republic's ballet, which has performed for more than 40 years, first emerged in Ankara. Just like the theater, this branch of art has created and developed its own audience and following. The theater, opera and ballet opens their curtains on a new season every October and continue staging foreign and national performances until the end of May. The Presidential Symphonic Orchestra also adds vibrancy to Ankara's culture and art scene. Among the important events held in Ankara are the 'Ankara International Film Festival,' which started in 1988 and the 'Ankara International Art Festival' begun in 1984. Other interesting events include the 'Ankara International Cartoon Festival,' the 'Ankara International Music Festival' and the 'Asia - Europe Art Exhibition.' Leave a Comment
