  • There were a lot of Japanese tourists in the restaurant and no local. I guess this restaurant must have catered meals for the tourists.

Frankly I dont know what's the name of the restaurant I went in Ankara as I was following the group tour. But I will always remember the pide and the cherry juice. There were yummy! In Malaysia, 'pide' is known as 'roti nan'. Usually you will find roti nan sold in Indian restaurants. But the one in Turkey was so fluffy.

    Many restaurants are good and...
Many restaurants are good and economical.

    Restaurants

Dining out in Ankara is a delight, as much for the superb cuisine as for the variety and wide choice of atmospheric restaurants, taverns, and lokantas. Many of the restaurants are renovated old Ankara houses, often with terraces or gardens offering exquisite views of the city. Meals in traditional Turkish restaurants, located mainly in the Kale district, start with a selection of delicious, cold appetizers called 'meze'. The waiter will then tell you what the catch of the day is. You can either choose a grilled or fried fish with a fresh salad or a selection of meat kebabs. Many times meals are eaten to the accompaniment of live traditional Turkish (fasil) music. If you're craving exotic flavors, be sure to check out the many European-style restaurants scattered throughout Turkey's capital as well. Don't forget to say 'Afiyet olsun' at the beginning and at the end of a meal; it means 'bon appetit' and also 'let it bring you good health'.

And Evi: Like searching for the Lost City of Atlantis!
  • Satisfaction:
  • So... Was it worth it?

We wandered for an hour and a half to find this place, one of us nursing a horrible hangover, we got lost on the way, stumbled across a demonstration and riot police, climbed about 100 steps and navigated our way through a ghost town. At the end of it all we found, as promised by my trusty Lonely Planet guide, a beautiful Ottoman house in perfect condition serving tasty omelettes and good cappuccinos (and Efes) at reasonable prices with a stunning view of all of Ankara. We were served breakfast al fresco on the second floor terrace which opened onto a fully decorated and accessorised Ottoman living room.

My Turkish wasn't up to translating the menu I'm afraid, so I played it safe and guessed that 'omlet' might be a good breakfast option. Bingo! I chose two different types and both were delicious - a perfect, well deserved treat after climbing all those steps to get there!

This is a stunning Restaurant / Art Gallery / Museum with spectacular city views and excellent service. Well worth a visit.

Kalbur Restaurant: Delicacies From Under the Sea
  • Satisfaction:
  • there are certain privileges a city can offer only when you are an inhabitant, and unaware of the missing, the rest goes on living satisfied.. unless they run into this restaurant - which is difficult without the assistance of an insider. this seafood restaurant is one of a kind in whole Turkey despite being located in an inland city and eating there will be a significant experience. the right definition for what is served here could be 'Elysian Food'. the place is owned and run by an innovative couple, Mehmet - Bilen Tekmen dedicated to creating recipes that make use of literally anything from the depths of the sea and sharing those with their selected customers (or so to say, friends). the evidence of the pleasure seeking in their experimentation is quite obvious when you are tasting the end product. if you are a first timer it will be wise to leave the selection of food to the owner and you will be delighted with what you get anyway (and probably will follow the same path every other time and get carried away). the food is served in small portions and an excellent pace allowing you to feel and concentrate on its taste, and it is amazing to lean back afterwards and watch how everything is so well in order. the superb food is complemented with choices from the wine cellar if the traditional Turkish drink 'raki' is not preferred. the restaurant is small and definitely requires a reservation far in advance. it is closed on Mondays and credit cards are not accepted.

it is hard to name one favourite dish. every specialty of the restaurant should be experienced in due time (one visit might not be enough). to leave the decision to the owner is strongly advised; there will be no disappointment out of it. the food is matchless; if you are a lover of fish/seafood, it is possible to find that in the most unimagined forms and tastes. sometimes the way they are presented makes it hard to recognize even when you are familiar with them, but never is a bad surprise.

    Kukla Kebap: Kukla Kebap
As an İskender fan, I can Easily say this is one of the best restaurants in Ankara serving İskender. İskender is the only main course served here, but also you can taste wonderful desserts here. Prices are not very high when thought with the quality you observe.
To add, especially at friday and saturday nights you can watch 'Karagöz ve Hacıvat' a traditional Turkish muppet theatre. The name of the restaurant comes from here ('kukla' means 'muppet' in Turkish); the founder has been a muppet master.
