The area around and inside the citadel, being the oldest part of Ankara, contains many fine examples of traditional architecture. There are also lovely green areas in which to relax. It is well known that the Ankara region was the cradle of wine in Hatti and Hittite times around 2000 B.C. Many restored traditional Turkish houses in the area of the citadel now serve as restaurants and shops.

    Karagöl - Black Lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the favorite place for picnics around Ankara is, Karagol Lake. Especially in winter or fall it has a beautiful scenery. Trekking in the mountains around the lake, makes one feel excellent (if you don't smoke!!!)!

This is a must see as the best artefacts from excavations made in Anatolia can be found here. In the basement there are exhibitions of Greek and Roman artefacts but the best part is the different rooms on the ground floor showing the pre-classical civilisations of Anatolia. As you enter the museum you will start your tour from the right and come to rooms with items from the Palaeolithic period, Neolithic period (Catal Hüyük), Chalcolithic era, Bronze age (Alacahöyük), Assyrian (Kültepe), Hittite (Hattusas), Phrygian (Gordion), Urartian and Lydian eras. The museum is housed in an old Han (covered market with workshops) from the 15th century. The entrance fee is 10 000 000 TL. It might be closed on Mondays.

    The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
  • Tip Rating:
  • Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi is one of the richest museums in Turkey, and is located next to the citadel. Artifacts from the various civilizations in Anatolia, starting from the Stone Age (50,000 B.C., Middle Paleolithic Period), and periods until the Roman Period (second century A.D.) can be seen here. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to enjoy the museum thoroughly.

  • I like these museums, which there is one of in most large Turkish cities. The one in Ankara has recently been renovated and have a rather big collection of artefacts from the Ottoman period. There is a room for cloths and textiles, a room for metalwork, another with beautifully carved wooden doors etc. It was quite difficult to find the museum, which is above Atatürk Bulvari, off Talat Pasa Bulvari. Walking up Talat Pasa Bulvari you shall turn right before the hospital. The way was not signed. Entrance fee was 2 000 000 TL.

The mausoleum of the Turkish Republic's founder and leader, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Anitkabir was built on the hill of Rasattepe. It was completed in 1953. Ataturk, who died in 1938, was removed from the temporary burial site at the Ethnographic Museum and brought here with a great ceremony the same year. Within the Anitkabir complex, there are many towers named after important events/organisations in the Turkish history. The hallowed Mausoleum hall itself is a colonnaded temple with huge bronze doors but little in the way of decoration. Opposite is the tomb of Ismet Inonu, the first prime minister of the Turkish republic and president after Ataturk's death. The Anitkabir museum is located between the Tower of the National Pact and the Tower of the Revolution. A number of Ataturk's personal belongings are exhibited, including clothes that he wore, and gifts presented to him by visiting foreign officials. When I went there I was about 10 years old, and thought the whole site was quite impressive with its size and design, especially with the passage to the Mausoleum with lion statues on both sites. Opening hours: Winter - 0900-1200 & 1300-1700. Summer - 0900-1230 & 1330-1700, closed on Mondays. Apparently, there is a sound & light show at nights but please check it in advance.

    Parks in Ankara
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Ankara parks are worth to see. Not like other cities in Turkey. In Ankara they are big and green. Full of trees. This is "Kugulu Park" or "Swan Park" in Kavaklidere, in the middle of Ankara. You can see nice swans in there and have some rest. The other nice park is in Cankaya called "Seymenler Parki". I think it's bigger. There are no swans but maybe you can have more relax.

  • Tower of Independence and three statues - Ankara
    Tower of Independence and

I arrived to Anit Kabir from Tandoyan. After a long walk along the road through the park you come to the Tower of Freedom, to the left, and Tower of Independence, to the right. In both towers there are exhibitions and in front of them there are statues. The three male statues in front of the Freedom tower represents the youth of Turkey, the Turkish soldier and the Turkish farmer. In front of the Independence tower there are statues of three women. They express sorrow over the death of Atatürk.

    Museum of Ethnography
  • Tip Rating:
  • This museum is easily found as you go down the Ataturk Boulevard - the main route from Ulus to Yenisehir. It houses a fine collection of Turkish folkloric artifacts as well as artifacts from Seljuk and Ottoman mosques. It is open every day (8:30 - 12:30, 1:30 - 5:30), except for Mondays.

In the towers there are exhibitions of personal items of Atatürk (even two cars), documents and photos and text about the construction of the mausoleum. Below the Hall of honour there is a museum of "the war of independence", and the beginning of the Turkish state and its founder Kemal Atatürk. It is a very patriotic museum. In the first part there are scenes from trenches with sounds and a lot of paintings.
