this goes for the whole of...
  • Tip Rating:
  • this goes for the whole of Turkiye. Many women complain about verbal and physical harrassment in Turkey. Although it's not necessary to be paranoid and let stupid hassles ruin your trip, it's as well to take a few precautions. At the very least, keep your torso, legs and upper arms covered, especially as you travel farther east. You might also consider wearing a wedding ring. When walking, look purposeful, ignore catcalls and steer clear of lonely streets after dark. When eating out alone, ask for the aile salonu (family dining room). Going out drinking by yourself is basically stupid.

  • - When drinking Raki, be aware that it contains 45 degrees of alchol although it is easy to drink it. Do not drink it fastly like drinking wine. And try 'Meze' with it. You cannot do anything against the headache you will feel next morning after an overdose of Raki -Traffic accidents are very often in Turkey.

  • Do not argue with the policemen. ( They usually behave gentle to the tourists, but most of them cannot speak foreign languages)

    Ankara is cold
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be prepared for low temperatures, windy and even sometimes snowy weather even in October - remember that Ankara is located 894m/2933 feet above sea level. . I was in Ankara in the end of October - the temperature at night went down below 0°C(32°F), temp. in my hotel room was about 15°C (59°F). One day before I was in Cappaddocia (20°C=68°F), two days before at the Mediterranean Sea (30°C=86°F). .

    Ankara.The places extremely not safe
I am from Istanbul a native born,43.I know Ankara very well since ı was 8 year old where my grandma used to live and as nature of my business often travel here.Anyway after immigration wave like any other big cities had in Turkey in last 10 years,Ankara also faced this thing and still living up to it.This is ironic because Ankara is capital and supposed to be police everywhere.Yes there is police but since the city is full of bureacrats and government officials, after 17.00 or 18.00 pm naturally everbody go back their home and some streets and places turn into crime scenes except busy areas like Kızılay because of lack of the police forces or these places are taken low profile compared to other more important VIP areas where consulates' residances and richest areas are These dangerous places definitely not to be after dark (also be very careful daytime if you are foreigner or do not know the area well) are : Ulus and neighbourhoods (Heykel,Rüzgarlı,Bentderesi,GençlikParkı and around,Stadium); Also the walking street (passing TRT ) between Sıhhiye and Ulus; These above mentioned places are full of muggers, road stoppers, addictive (we call tinerci)people, pickpocketers, beggars, alcoholics, pimps, hookers and crazy people so on....Travel safe

    No deodorant
It's almost impossible to find deodorant - supermarkets and other shops selling shampoo etc do not sell it. This is probably due to cultural reasons - personal smell does not play a big part in Ankara society (except in a negative way). I finally found some in a specialist chemist, locked in a special cabinet, and they looked at me a bit strange when I bought it.

    Smoking
Know that people here smoke exceptionally high. It is seen in many public places, unfortunately in hotel lobbies, buses and parks. If you are allergic to smoke (as I am) you must take precautions.
