With respect to transportation, Alanya is usually reached via Antalya. That is the international airport from where you go by bus for traveling to Alanya (about one hour and a half). Ofcourse Alanya can be reached by sea, taking on of the cruises departing from Istanbul.
The popular means of transport by "dolmus" (a collective taxi/the kind of shared minibus) has been replaced by public buses that have taken over most of the routes in the small streets. All over Alanya new bus stops are appearing. The local bus drivers also stop without the official stops ... so just wave and signal to the driver. Better wait at the official bus stop to be sure the bus stops!
Furtheron there is a taxi, or try a horse-car trip... so romantic.
Taxi is the best way to get around in Alanya. We lived a 10 minutes walk from the beach and we used to walk down to the beach and take the taxi back. That cost us about 4 - 5 million turkish lira, which is VERY cheap!
When I was in Alanya, it wasnýt yet a tourist trap and I hope it hasnýt changed so much from those days. Use taxis! They were really cheap and it was cheap to rent them for hours and just drive around the town and to the upper hills.
The Dolmus buses stop in Alanya town centre (centrum) but they have little buses going up and down the beach road every couple of minutes and they are an experience in themselves. If your'e walking down the road they stop just in case you want to get on! Such a change from the buses in England! The first time we used one we didn't know the price or anything, just go with the flow you can pay when you get off. I still don't know how much it cost every time we gave the driver 2 million lira he gave us change, but it was never the same amount. It's great, totally unmissable>
One day we rented a car and just drove around. We had a map and decided just to go and see where we would end up. I can really recommend this way of getting around as you see quite a bit of places you wouldn't have seen some other way. We had a lot of fun. We drove into mountains where we had a lot of rain and no roof on the jeep ofcourse! We also had to wait somewhere for a little while as there was a cow on the road which wouldn't move.
I was to young to rent a car when I was in Alanya but the Dolmus system got us everywhere we wanted to go. These buses wait at the busstops until they have enough passengers and the head on. The price was low but there was one downside. People were smoking in the dolmus and they are without air-conditioning so they drive with the door open.
A taxi is the way to go in alanya for a tourist, I would´n rent a car here because they drive like crazy here. Every day there was at least two car accidents while we were there.
Rent a jeep and stroll Alanya... This is the map of alanya and u can get map from this address : http://www.alanya.gov.tr/resim/fotogaleri/alanya001s.jpg
The best way to get there is by plane. You arrive at Antalya Int. Airport. Then take the bus to Alanya. It takes about two hours.
