Anatolian carpet-weaving is very special type of handcraft with roots are deeply embedded in the past and every knot the bearer of a long tradition. The type of carpet consisting of threads stretched lenghtwise on the loom to form what is known as the warp and threads threaded through these from side to side to form a weft that will tighten the weave and form the basis of the knots that will constitute the pile and various decorative motifs,is found in Turkish history as early as the 5th-3rd centuries B.C.
One of the places in Anatolia where this intimate relationship between the Turks and the carpet is still in evidence is the country town of Dosemealti in the province of Antalya.
The first carpets are surrounded by narrow borders containing geometrical or plant motifs. In Turkish carpets the borders are of great importance in so far as their characteristic features serve to indicate the region in which they are woven.
Turkish carpets are categorized as taban, kelle, cift, somya, minder, namazlik, yastik, heybe, etc.
    All are natural dyes

  • The shopping attitude depends on what you are buying and where you are buying. If you are buying gold and leather, NEVER PAY THE PRICE THEY ASK FOR!!BARGAIN!Cut the original price in less than half and start negotiating. Never show them the amount of money you have, if possibile show less and say "That's all I have" and try to get out of the shop. They will come after you :)) And if you negotiate and expect to pay by credit card, expect again another round of negotiation.
If you are coming from a rich country, never tell them that. Invent another place :)
On the other hand, if you are going to buy clothes from brand stores, don't expect to negotiate or to get any discounts...strange but that's how it is.

Gold and leather are the best buys there, but also all kinds of clothes. Turkey has great fabrics and designers, very trendy, funky and stylish clothes, so don't hesitate.

A lot if you buy a lot. About 200$ for a nice leather jacket and about 15$/gramm for gold.

It is great just to walk around the markets and breathe in the atmosphere. Wonderful smells of the spices and different foods being cooked. I love watching the locals bartering for things, it gets quite heated sometimes.

A good place to buy small gifts to take home like spices, coffee, tea and little trinkets.

    Main Market on Christmas Day
    by budapest8

The main market or Bazzar is facinating to walk around. I came here on Christmas Day as everything is open as Christmas is only celebrated by Christians and for Muslims it`s just another working day. The hotels do lay on special Christmas meals though for the tourists.

Leather items, jackets, hand bags, wallets, wips etc. Apple tea, tea glasses or tea trays. Carpets, generally clothes are quite cheap but just check the quality.

Use your common sense if you have some.
