Even if the temperature was about 39 degrees, we have found the courage to rent a car and try to find the ancient city of Phaselis…
We were impressed by the location and the way the port-city was built almost 3000 years ago.
The city was very well situated on a small peninsula separating three small and well-protected ports. The main street in the city (24 meters wide) was actually connecting both ports, having on sides all the common facilities (agoras, public baths, amphitheater).
The city was for long time a very important commercial node in the Mediterranean Sea being transferred from the Greeks to Persians and after that to the Egyptians, Romans and ending now inside the Turkish borders.

The city was abandoned in 13th century without any visible reasons. In my opinion, the geographical impossibility (lack of space) to expand the city may be a reason for its abandonment.

Can you even imagine how is to walk along those streets where the Lycians were walking 2700 yrs ago?!
I amclosing my eyes trying to imagine the way they were living and dreaming about almost the same things as us... today.

Olympos was another big city on the Mediterranean coast, having the roots 2500 years ago. Same as Phaselis, the city was belonging to all the big civilizations, very interesting for me was the place the city has gained in Mithraism… That religion was imported here by the pirates which were ruling the city in third century…
The city was abandoned in 15th century… We have found here some archeologists and students trying to reveal other and other mysteries from the ancient life in Olympos.

Beldibi What to Pack

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Sandals are good for a hotel stay but you will need a jogging shoes to walk mountainous areas.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: You will need quality sun protecting items. Sun will be almost on your head.

Photo Equipment: Digital cameras are my favourite but protect them under sun.

Miscellaneous: Never forget bottled (and cooled) water when you go out.

Favorite thing: It is only a dream to find real sandy beaches in Beldibi. However sea is crystal clear and usualy diving is not a must for seeing colourful fish. Swim, swim and swim again.

Fondest memory: It was fourth of fifth night of our stay. My little son did not sllep earlier and we had the opportunity to enjoy Highlights disco and animations. Refreshing winds from the sea, circus shows were excellent...
