    Open tombs in Myra

    by Diana75 Updated Mar 26, 2006

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Some tombs located on the lower part are opened and if you are curious to see if there is something inside you can step in.

Some of the tombs used to have paintings presenting the scenes from the dead person life but today there is not trace of these paintings anymore.

    The tombs are just empty.

    Myra's Rock-Cut Tombs features

    by Diana75 Updated Mar 26, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The large number of rock-cut sepulchres are imitating wooden houses and shrines, with pillared facades and reliefs.

Most of the reliefs are presenting moments from the daily life of the family or of the person buried there.

For example in the relief of the so-called "Painted Tomb" located on the hill in a place called the "River Necropolis", is a man, the father of the family, holding a wine cup in his hand and the man's wife sitting with her two children at her side.

In another tomb with a two-columned temple facade is a relief on the entrance that shows a family gathering, while the most unusual and eye-catching feature of the tomb is a relief showing two fantastic figures, one on either side of the door.

Sarcophaguses on the road to Demre (Kale)

    by Diana75 Updated Mar 26, 2006

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The road to Demre (Kale) and Myra is not interesting only from the landscape point of view.

Just getting closer and closer to Demre you find yourself in a wild mountain scenery scattered by old Lycian sarcophaguses.

We've been too curious for not stopping and have a closer look and take some pictures of this old monuments.
