The Chimaera ( Yanartas ) mystical flames

by canadiantrav Updated Apr 4, 2011

Just only a 30 minute drive from Kemer to the village of Cirali. To get the the flames one must either drive 4 kms along the village road to the north end of the village and from there you can walk up the mountain side aprrox 1 km ( 20 mins ) to visit the flames.

Located in the Cirali, at the north end of the village are the burning flames of the Chimaera. Known by the local inhabitants as the Yanartas ( meaning - burning stone).

It is a series of flames issuing out of cracks in the bare mountain face. It's not known what causes the phenomenon but traces of methane in the gas can be detected. The flames can be extinguished temporarily if they are covered over and then can be once again reignited. The climb is most rewarding and coolest as dusk falls, since the fires are best seen at night.

The famous myth of Bellerophontes is said to have taken place here. There is a special romanticism about this place that draws people to climb the mountain and view the natural wonders along with the evening sky.

The climb to the Chimaera is about 1 km and it is a series of wide rock steps to climb and it takes about 20 - 30 minutes depending on the individual. Closer to the flames the path will change to the natural terrain of the area.

It is not just for the fit and older people have done it. Also in the off season months of the spring and fall the weather will be much cooler making the walk easier. If one takes it slow and easy it can be done.....plus on the way up there are a few benches along the way for resting.

But if anyone has any major knee, hip or heart problems it can be risky. It can be more difficult to walk down and one MUST have good walking shoes. No flip-flops or high heeled shoes. Wear a small back pack so you can carry up some water as well.

Most important do not forget to bring a FLASHLIGHT as the path is not lit. And the best type of flashlights are the one's that you can wear on your head ( headlamp ) this way your hands are free.

    Arykanda - historical site

by canadiantrav Written Oct 16, 2007

About 2 hours by car from Kemer is the histoical site of Arykanda. A lesser known historical site along the Lycian Way. Located about 26 km. from Turuncova on the Finike-Elmali highway. After leaving the highway it is necessary to walk about 1 km. Arycanda (Arykanda) is a unique Lycian city, built upon five large terraces ascending a mountain slope, and was known for having the most pleasure and entertainment-loving (and debt-ridden) citizens. The city overlooks a magnificent valley and its view makes it one of the most spectacular sites in Lycia.

Cirali / Olympos...away from the mass tourism

Cirali / Olympos is located approx. 30 km southwest from Kemer. It is quiet and peaceful village perfect for families, nature lovers and for those wishing to get away from the mass touristic cities or towns. Once on the beach ( secluded & clean ) you can walk into the entrance of the ancient city of Olympos visiting the ruins located on either side of the creek.

Çýralý is also known for being the home of the antique city of Olympos, which was a port city, established in the 2nd century and continued to flourish until the 15th century A.D. This ancient city is situated on both sides of a brook, which dries up in the summer. The site is heavily covered with bushes and trees The ruins here are from the Lycian period up to the Byzantine times.

You’ll find no banana boats or disco bars at Cirali, just a perfect 4km beach lapped by clear blue water, and walking trails that will take you into the drama of the surrounding coastal mountains.
