Kusadasi is a resort town at the Turkish Aegean coast. The city stands on a bay in the Aegean with the peninsula of Guvercin Ada sticking out into the sea at one end.
The name comes from 'kuş' (bird) and 'ada' (island) as the peninsula has the shape of a bird's head.
Since Byzantine times it has been known as Ephesus Neopolis, Scala Nuova, becoming Kush-Adasi at the beginning of the 20th century.

"Kaleici" meand "inner castle" in Turkish. Kaleici is the oldest part of the town. It is a historical area, with old houses in which many restaurants, shops and some night clubs are situated. You can find also some turkish baths (hammam) in this area. In the local shops you can buy souvenirs and other products with not a very good quality, but with very low prices.

Kusadasi is a very popular resort. Many turkish people have their summer houses there. It is also very crowded with tourists, yachts and big ships.
The center of Kusadasi has many places where you can shop, where you can have your meal and enjoy nightlife. The city is not very big so all places are easy to be reached.

Pigeon Island is the symbol of Kusadasi. As the island was much-frequented place of birds during the seasonal migrations, it was named as Bird Island.
In the times of Ottomans, the name of the island was given to the town and the town was started to be called as "Kusadasi" (Bird Island). Since then, the name of the island was changed into "Pigeon Island". The island was used for military purposes during the Ottoman Era and before, as the location of the island was strategic for securing the shores or preventing the attacks from the sea. The Byzantine castle standing on the rocks, used against pirates, is known as "Pirate Castle".
Pigeon Island , unlike its name, is now connected to the land by a mole.

    from silk
    by Arial_27
After they make the silk from the caterpillar cacoons, they weave it into carpets and rugs. You will see a lot of rug manufacturing and shops here in Kusadasi. As you can see this woman here has a picture infront of her of what the carpet should look like when it's finished.
There are three main kinds of carpets that are sold here: silk, wool and cotton. One carpet can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to make. the gentleman that took us through this carpet factory showed us the different carpets made from different regions in Turkey. You can tell where the carpet was made by the design on the carpet itself.
