Kusadasi

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Kusadasi is a resort town at Aegean coast. The city stands on a bay in the Aegean with the peninsula of Guvercin Ada sticking out into the sea at one end.The name comes from 'kus' (bird) and 'ada' (island) as the peninsula has the shape of a bird's head.Since Byzantine times it has been known as Ephesus Neopolis, Scala Nuova, becoming Kush-Adasi at the beginning of the 20th century. You can watch my 2 min 39 sec Video clip Kusadasi Early Morning with Petek Dincoz – Sen Don Duya - Turkish pop music.1 min 38 sec Video clip Kusadasi Sunrise Slide-show with Akin – Bover Turkish pop music,4 min 00 sec Video clip Kusadasi Grand Ozcelik Hotel with Mustafa Sandal – Aya Benzer - Turkish pop music.Learn more on my VT Kusadasi page.

Didyma (Didim)

by WulfstanTraveller

Didim is the site of the famous, massive Temple of Apollo at Didyma. The curent structure was begun in the Hellenstic period, around 300 BC, and work continued throughout the Roman era, with the building still not quite finished when the cult was shut down by the Christians close to AD 400. It is simply massive and quite elaborately decorated, something that is rather unusual for Greek (as opposed to Roman) structures, and is big and richly decorated even for the more grandiose and "baroque" Hellenistic era

Priene

by WulfstanTraveller

This site, in far western Aydin Province, just south of Kusadasi, is the ruin of an ancient Greek city. Unlike many others, this place was pretty much abandoned by the Roman period so the Greek construction is not replaced or buiklt over with later Roman stuff. It is thus somewhat unusual here for that reason and one can see much of this old, small Greek city state. It includes a theatre, bouleterion (city council chamber), residential areas, temple, etc.Priene also has a beautiful and striking setting. It is built on the slopes of a hill over the nearby plain and below an almost sheer, high limestone cliff.

Afrodisias

by WulfstanTraveller

On a road off the highway from Aydin to Denizli lie the ruins of the Roman-era city Afrodisias. Although not as touristy as some places, these ruins are pretty extensive and have an interesting setting in a valley with large mountains nearby. There is a fair amount of relatively unusual sculpture here, with spiral columns among others. In addition, it offers what is probably the best-preserved Roman circus/race track in the world. Although not as large as, say the Circus Maximus in Rome, this structure is much more inctact and visible, with arched tunnels to go into.
