    Gerga, Aydin Ili

by WulfstanTraveller Updated Oct 21, 2004

In the hills southeast of Cine, in the southern part of Aydin Ili (Aydin Province), is a site called Gerga. It is fairly remote, being a good hour-or-so hike outside of a couple small villages. It consists of fascinating and unusual all-stone buildings, a couple still very much intact, built with stone beams and slabs for the roof. There are also some stelae and fallen sculptures, and writing in the Greek alphabet is visible. One building says "Gergas" across the front. The settlement is basically contemporaneous with the Hellenistic period and early Rome, but not that much is known about it. It is fascinating as an unusual glimpse into a native Anatolian rural settlement with little Graeco-Roman influence. The hike is also very nice and the countryside stunning.

This is, needless to say, not much of a tourist spot so one is likely to be all alone out there. We met some friendly locals, though.
