The Heykel

Favorite thing: This is perhaps the first word you'll learn upon arrival in Bursa. It's posted in almost every dolmus (mini-bus/shared taxi) and bus, and it refers to Turkey's iconic political figure - Mustafa Kemal. And it's a cold slab of sculptured stone - a sculpture of Mustafa Kemal himself - simply translated 'statue' in English.

The heykel is sort of the city's ground zero from which directions and orientation are based. Behind the statue is a garaj (yes, that is garage), one of the city's many, but for tourists perhaps the most important. From this garaj you could take the shared taxi to telerifik, among others.

Towel Buying in Bursa

crossing for Bursa

Favorite thing: Bursa is famous for towel making and our group had great fun trying on the turkisk towelling robes and turbans - we all looked so funny with robes over our shorts. I still have mine so many years later, as good as the day I bought it.

Our trip to Bursa was part of the Istanbul coach tour that we undertook. We departed by ferry boat (an unpleasant trip as most of our party were suffering from upset stomach - a legacy of our last meal in Istanbul) from Yalove and then coached to Bursa.

Favorite thing: Visit 'Mahfel-Mado Coffee house' in 'setbaþý' in the morning for breakfast and for ice-cream in the evening. A restored building, traditional ottoman house, hanging over the 'gökdere' valley.
Unfortunately no beer served, not a place for me but nice and calm place to rest for a while.

Favorite thing: If on a clear winter's day in Bursa (a rare occurrence) you travel up to Tophane, you will see a large city extend before you. As the last rays of the setting sun strike Bakacak point on Uludag, the twentieth-century lights of the most important Ottoman city of a past era start to appear... Modern Bursa is encroaching on the slopes of Uludag and surrounding old Bursa on 3 sides, eclipsing its beauty. Night conceals the ugly concrete piles and shapeless, soulless buildings of this modern Bursa.

City Centre Waterway

Favorite thing: I spotted this river running though the street nearby to the football stadium. I presume that is was a river rather than a sewer, although no fish were seen.
