    Fondest memory: Quote:
"The Dardanelles is a 61km (28 mile) strait between Europe and Asiatic Turkey. The maximum width is 7km and in the area known as the Narrows, the distance is no more than 1,600 metres. The Dardanelles Straits are overlooked by high cliffs on the Gallipoli Peninsula"

    The Gallipoli Peninsula

    by Lion_Beat Written Aug 26, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    a View on Gallipoli peninsula

Favorite thing: The Gallipoli Peninsula is a long and narrow line of land with high hills.
Two towns are located in the European Side of Dardanelli: Gelibolu (Turkish form for Gallipoli) and Eceyabat (which is right across Canakkale town on the Asian side).

Nowdays the peninsula is a National Park of a rare beauty with wonderful hills and views on Dardanelli and Aegean Sea. For centuries these places were a meeting point for different civilizations and knowdays a mojor cross-point in bird-migrations routes from Northern Europe to Africa.

The geology, archaelogy and environment of the Gallipoli Peninsula have made Gallipoli a popular tourist spot.

Fondest memory: You probably heard of Gallipoli as a bloody spot in a history of WWI, and these memories remain... Today the first thing which will come to your mind when Gallipoli mentioned will be the war...
I will give you more details on this in my other tips.

I remember the first time I saw the movie about this war, "GALLIPOLI" with young Mel Gibson. One of the best movies ever. Try to find this movie and watch it before you will visit these places.

In the picture: the town of Eceyabat, as seen from the middle of Dardanelli
