    Bus service “Metro”

by Raimix Written May 29, 2011

That’s funny, but it looks it is so worth to move Istanbul – Edirne just because of good quality bus. The company that served this route was “Metro”. Near every seat of bus there were small computers with TV, video, music, games. Also they served tea, coffee, cakes, and sweets for free. The distance Istanbul – Edirne is 235 kilometers, most of road – autobahn.

Metro bus stops in bus station a bit outside city center, so another free service bus takes you to center (near Selimye mosque). That takes about 30 minutes more.

The price of ticket was 20 Turkish liras (about 8,80 euros). In Edirne it is possible to buy Metro ticket in small shop near Selimye mosque, better don’t wait till last minute, as buses fill fast.

    Motorway from Edirne

Edirne is located about 225km north-west of Istanbul and the two are connected via the O-3/E80 toll-road/motorway. It took me no more than 2 hours to get here and the road is just like motorways in western Europe - modern, fast and smooth. However, as it's a toll-road, you have to pay for the privilege to use it and it cost me TL5.50.

Although Edirne is in the opposite direction from that which most tourists will take when leaving Istanbul, getting there is really quite easy. It is not too far from Istanbul and the roads between Edirne and Istanbul are excellent. There is a big, excellent freeway that goes straight between the two cities and even though it's a toll highway, the fee is small while it makes the voyage very quick and very easy. There are also places to spot along the rout as the area is well developed with services. Should one wish to avoid the small freeway toll or take a more leisurely voyage through Trakya, the other roads are also great and travel is easy. One could very easily travel from Istanbul to Edirne, and then down to Gallipoli, from which one could return to Istanbul or take one of the many, frequent ferries across to Canakkale and into the region of Troy, or vice-versa. All of the roads are excellent and make such a trip quite easy by either bus or private car. We travelled throughout the region in our own car.
