Oh god! In every corner we made a stop to buy something to eat! There was no need for snacks like chips in Eskisehir, we were just entering a store and we tasted delicious bites of baklava, then at another place we tasted the local halva, met halva is very popular here (they have some huge ones but watch out if you’re on diet!), and then we bought some bags of dry fruits at ridiculous low prices.

And of course, as elsewhere in Turkey we tried many times the famous simit bread in many places, you see, they have these small cars where they sell simit all day :)

We also try the local bread that is filled with potatoes (pic 4), we tried small portions again, I think it was called hashasli, a great tasty bread which is better when it’s hot.

At Atlihan which is at Odunpazari we found all the souvenirs/gift stores together! The place is obviously restored and looks very nice with a great central yard.

There are some stores that sell cheap souvenirs but also some stores that are specialized on things from meerschaum, like the famous meerschaum pipes, jewelry from meerschaum etc

We spent a lot of time at YUNAR store that specializes in meerschaum pipes and other items. The owner took us back at the lab where they create everything so we saw his brother working in front of us.

We also visited a store full of unique glass items, some of them are really beautiful and not expensive at all. The owner didn’t speak English but it was easy to negociate :)

Eskisehir luletasi shop: Meerschaum - Luletasi

by Arkeolog Written May 25, 2010
    Meerschaum Turk's Head Pipe

There is a little workshop in it and meerschaum artist goes on to carve pieces such as candlestick, thimbles, necklaces etc when you visit the shop.

What to buy: anything made of meerschaum. All hand made, all nice and all worth to buy. Definetly it is the best gift from Eskisehir. Turk Head pipes are my favourite.

What to pay: 30-100 TL for pipes (If you want to buy bigger and more figurful you need to pay more)
    5-10 TL for figurines
    5 TL for thimbles

Eskisehir Luletasi Shop: Marbling on Glass

by Arkeolog Written May 26, 2010
    Marbling on Glass

Eskisehir Luletasi Shop is located at Atlihan-Odunpazari district. They have a great collection for marbling on glass and meerschaum.

What to buy: Marbling on Glass. It's very colorful and shiny. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets etc. Nice gift from Eskisehir

About Marbling: Marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to marble or other stone, hence the name. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferred to a sheet of paper (or other surfaces such as fabric). This decorative material has been used to cover a variety of surfaces for several centuries. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype.
Another method of marbling more familiar to Europeans and Americans is made on the surface of a viscous mucilage, known as size or sizing in English. This method is commonly referred to as "Turkish" marbling. The term "Turkish" was most likely used as a reference to the fact that many Europeans first encountered the art in Istanbul.

    What to pay: 5-50 TL
