To any new visitor to turkey.
I have seen on this site that people speak of Turkish Lira millions example 2.5 million TL to the UK Pound.
It has changed some years ago so now - example 2.5 YTL (New Turkish Lira) to UK Pound.
So now you will not be confused when reading here.
What to buy: Jewellery, Carpets, Lighting, Clothes, Shoes, Bags, Spices,Turkish Delight and lots of other items....many hand made.
What to pay: Traders will accept UK Pound and Euro but be certain you can convert it in your head so you know exactly what you are paying them.
Above all - Barter, it is expected, and remember be polite but do not be a pushover. In some instances you should expect to pay about 50% of the original asking price, if you are lucky or good at negotiating you could pay less...but always remember they generally only have 6 months in which to make a living!
Have a great holiday.......I Love Turkey!
This place is special, vibrant bustling hive of activity, you can get anything from Vegetables, Linens, belts, designer bags ,T shirts even leaches.
Now for the haggling which in my view makes this place tick.
Forget the price they mention, have a price in your mind of what you are prepared to pay and stick to it.
This is how it goes I saw hat which I wanted (jack wolf-skin)not original of course.
I ask how much? answer 30TL.
No Chance I reply,OK OK how much?
10TL I reply No No No your robbing me!
OK see you later, wait wait I make you special price 20TL
Nope sorry,OK whats the problem here he replies
The price I reply,OK OK how much he says again?
8TL I replied,he then laughs saying its gone down.
I said yes that's right so 10TL it is then?.He finally says OK OK 10TL.
The rule is:if your not happy walk away its amazing how many times they will call you back and re-negotiate.
If not there's plenty of other stalls that will make a deal.
Market is normally a Tuesday.
What to buy: Vegetables, Linens, belts, designer bags ,T shirts even leaches.
What to pay: Whatever you feel is right!.
What to buy:
Well, it is hard to say. If you are going through Istanbul than you will know that most turkish tourist trinkets can be had for much less there than in the beach towns.
That does not mean that there is nothing to buy. You can find great quality pirate DVD's, not to mention good quality, low-cost knockoffs of every design known to man in all the little towns, Hisaranou is great for this. Of course, you can find most of these things in Istanbul, however many people from the UK arrive directly in Fethiye - from Dalaman airport.
One of the best ways to get a good price is to buy more than 1 item or pool your purchases together with ohters to make the sale more attractive. Yes, they inflate the prices and bargaining is necessary, but compared to what most of you pay at homw don't be ridicuolously greedy.
