Foreign Exchange

by wrggrant

When travelling in Turkey you will get better rates for the pound in Turkey rather than changing money before you go. We found that as well as hotels, shops and restaurants were keen to exchange our pounds to turkish lira at very favourable rates. No commission to pay and you need only exchange money for immediate needs. Our best memory was the friendly people who all had the time to speak, and joke with us in English. They all have a good understanding of our language. The restaurants ranged from from good to excellent and all were moderately priced. What we missed most when we came home was the weather: we returned to a wet and cold Scotland in October.

Places to see in Turkey along the Aegean coast.

by ilovenewjersey

Travelling to the Aegean part(west, coast line) of Turkey is more interesting than the Northern part(Black sea). I think this part of Turkey has more to offer for tourist who wants to mix pleasure, and at the same time discovering the rich history of this great Country. I will make Kusadasi as my base in the south. It is a joyfull place to be, and is accessible to Ephesus, Artemis, Virgin Mary's house, and even Pamukaleh. Take a boat cruise and go island hopping, it's a great experience. Walking along the boulevard in Kusadasi. Enjoying my beer at night in the old town of Kusadasi, with live band, people dancing, singing, having fun.

RAKI AND MEZE

by Arkeolog

Raki, The Traditional Turkish DrinkWhen one thinks of Turkey or Turks, one is reminded of Raki, the traditional Turkish drink. Raki can be made from different fruits in different regions, but raisin is the most common. The drink made in Anatolia and known as Turkish raki has a history going back 400 years. The art of distillation which started in the Arab world and spread to the neighboring countries was implemented when people thought of making use of the sugar in the residue of wine processing. With the addition of aniseed, raki took on its Turkish characteristic. The famous Turkish traveler Evliya Celebi listed the artisans of Istanbul in the first volume of his book on his voyages which he wrote in 1630. Among the artisans he also mentioned the arakmakers. While writing that arak was made from all kinds of plants, he also mentioned the word raki and said that drinking even one drop...

A Turkish food Classic, DONER

by Arkeolog

Doner...Undoubtedly it's the best known Turkish food. Also known as "king of kebabs". If you want to have doner in a plate with yogurt and sauce, ask for Iskender kebab. Bursa, one of Turkish cities, is very well known for its doner. In Bursa you can see a lot of Doner restaurants. In Istanbul, I recommend NiyaziBey Restaurant.

Traditional winter drink, SALEP

by Arkeolog

Salep is a milk drink made from the aromatic ground root of wild orchids which bloom in april and may . It is popular in Turkey and neighbour countries from Ottoman times. Salep, which improves the body's resistance, is sprinkled with cinnamon. It's commonly available in winter times and it's really yummy :) There are many companies for Salep but Vefa Bozacisi and MADO are the best taste for it.

Tourist Information Office, Antalya

by hopang

The signboard of the tourist information office in Antalya (depicted in our photo on the right) is a little bit misleading. This signboard is located at Cumhuriyet Cadessi outside Selekler Shopping Center not far from Kaleici Old Town. We thought the tourist information office is located inside the shopping center as the sign points to the shopping mall. It is actually located at least 150 meters from this signboard. Something must be done by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in order not to mislead any more foreign tourists who need help! We wasted at least half an hour of our time walking up and down searching for the tourist information office. Unfortunately not many locals including the shop owners know the whereabout of the tourist information office in Antalya! The following are the particulars of the tourist information office in Antalya:-Address: Cumhuriyet Cadessi, Ozel idare...

ATM's

by junecorlett

The system used in the bank was quite new to us. You draw a ticket on entering the bank. If it is extremely busy and you know the waiting period for a teller will be a while, you can step outside, Have a coffee or whatever..and go back inside. The tellers have an electronic display above their counter, calling the next number for attendance. We did not know this either, and spent the first five minutes waiting around. All the signs were in Turkish.... The ATM's in Turkey only dispenses Turkish Lira. We did not know this. After using the ATM we had to go into the bank to exchange to Euro's as we were only in the port for the day. bank client told us what to do.How nice it would be if my country had the same system.
