We had one short hour to explore the back streets of Heybeliada, but we found a few interesting things, like the abandonded broom and can, and some very fine wooden homes.
During the entire time there we only encountered a single car and not even that was a car, it was the municipal garbage collectors....we saw a few people walking and some on bicylces, but no cars, no, not even a single car. As you can see in the photo there were plenty of horses and carriages at the "taxi" stand.
Favorite thing: We found many sailors walking about on the island and you could tell by the pasteboard on their shoulders that they were officers in training, not yet owners of their stripes. When we landed at Heybeliada there was a sailor guarding the port as you can see in the photo. At first we thought that this was a Naval Base, but after we saw the officers in training we knew that it was a training academy. The sign says Deniz Lisesi, I don't know Turkish, so this could mean "Naval Academy", or it could be the name an officer being honored....if someone could help out here it would be appreciated. When I looked it up on the internet, did find the following Wikpedia, but in Turkish (http://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deniz_Lisesi). I don't know if there is a way to turn this into English or not, but I could not find one.
