Entrance to Metro from the Airport

The Ataturk International airport is located 24km (15 miles) west of Istanbul. There are 2 terminals.
You can get here by BUS from Taksim, every half hour between 06:00-23:00. (Price: 2,400,000 TL, aprox 4 USD). A Taxi to Taksim could cost U about 12 USD.
There's also a light RAILWAY from Aksaray to the airport (400.000 TL), with the following stops: Aksaray, Emniyet, Ulubatli (Topkapi), Bayrampasa, Sagmalcilar, Kartaltepe, Bus Terminal, Esenler, Terazidere, Davutpasa, Merter, Zeytinburnu, Bakirkoy, Bahcelievler, Atakoy, Yenibosna, Airport.

Fly into the airport and have a friend or the hotel you are staying at pick you up. Once in Istanbul, taxis are very easy.

There aren't many trains, so if you are travelling around the country, you'll end up either travelling by air or bus. The busses can be very nice and comfortable, make sure the bus has working air conditioning if you are going on a longer trip. When you are on the busses for a long trip the drivers who aren't currently driving (they trade off) will probably come around with a bottle of something that smells like lemon furniture polish. The put it in your hands and you rub your hands together to freshen up. Be warned, we all had elephant feet after sitting for so long! Our ankles were terribly swollen.

I ended up on a very long and not very good bus trip (apparently not that common to have a bad bus) -- my friends and I couldn't bear taking another 14 hour bus ride on that bus to get back to Istanbul, and we couldn't get plane tickets back from Ephesus, so we took a cab! Holy cow, it was quite an adventure. Especially at the ferry dock at 3am with thousands of other people.

The most airlines fly to Istanbul Ataturk Airport. From there you can take a cab or a shuttle bus to the city centre.
The transportation system in Istanbul is still not really that organised, but they're making progress! So there is a Tramline wish starts from Eminonö and goes to Topkapi.

The best way to go and leave is by Airplane.
The airport is new and nice not far away from down-town.
If by mistake you go by your own car, be careful the other drivers. They drive like crazy.
Thousands of Taxis are going to be waiting for you everywhere around you.
The best way to do though is to rent a taxi for as long as you like ,one, two days and make an arrangement with the driver for the money(don't forget to bargain). It is going to be your private taxi!!

My air. I was invited my TK and their airline was very reasonable.
We were a group of Travel agents and were showing the sites by bus and a guide. The Guide was the son of the Turkist airlines director at the time.

Must be the most expensive airport in the world - 30TL - 15 euro for a (fairly crap) beer!!

The metro and tram system is brilliant however and very cheap and easy to use (1.75TL) to the centre.
