we flew from Stuttgart to Istanbul
public transportation was fine! In fact, it was quite an adventure, since our hotel was in one of the suburbs!

Airplane is a nice solution. Onur Air or Turkish Airlines are OK!
Taxis are cheap so you don't need a car because traffic jams in Istambul are really common...
