  • Haci Abdullah Restaurant - Istanbul
    Haci Abdullah Restaurant

I have been told that Haci Abdullah Restaurantis is a restaurant with a long history and it is also a fine example of the Ottoman cuisine. I should say I agree that it is a great place to eat :)

There is a wide variety of dishes and they offer really good choice of sweets.

The interior is stylish and the service is good. At least I could not complain from it.

    Prices:
    Salads: around YTL 5
    Main dishes: around YTL 14
    Desrts: around YTL 4.50

OK, here is the disappointing bit:
Alcohol is not served in this restaurant.
I have been told that the owner is a bit conservative and that is the reason for not serving alcohol.

Well, I had Tas kebab. Delicious :)))

    Inside Pierre Loti Cafe

In order to get to Pierre Loti Cafe from Eyup Mosque you will pass trough the Eyup Sultan Cemetery. You will see gravestones dating from the Ottoman period can along the road leading up to the top. The cafe is situated at the top of the hill.

You will walk up hill for some time but the view to the Golden Horn and the Istanbul skyline is fully worth the efforts. Actually this is one of the strongest advantages of the Pierre Loti Cafe - the splendid view t the Bosphorus.

The cafe is named after a famous French novelist and naval officer Pierre Loti. Although it is not known for certain, it is assumed that this was the cafe that Pierre Loti visited during his stay in Eyup in 1876.

The cafe itself is very cosy and it is furnished in 19th century style. I guess as an attempt to preserve the authentic atmosphere of these times the waiters still serve in costumes of that period.

What I had there is only tea, so I can not give ant specific recommendations what should you order. :)))

pierre loti cafe: Pierre Loti Cafe
  • Tip Rating:
  • After visiting Eyüp I walked up to Pierre Loti Cafe, not the nearest and easiest way which I found when I walked down. High on a hill, above a cemetery is Pierre Loti Cafe. It has great views over Istanbul, but unfortunatly it was not a very clear day I was there. You can come here just for a tea and narghile or to eat. I had lamb, sallad, bread and something to drink. With tip I paid 21 000 000 TL.

From Eminönü busstation you will find several buses to Eyüp.

    Yagalata: Fish Sandwiches
  • Tip Rating:
  • By the Galata bridge, in Eminönü, you can buy sandwiches with grilled fish from small boats. It is very tasty (and greasy) and cheap. A fish sandwich cost 1 500 000 TL.
I bought another deliscious fish sandwich (that also had sallad, tomatoes and onions) in Anadolu Kavagi.

Kizilkaya Fast Food: Duner and Airan
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I was just having a walk and a felt hungry. When I had a look at the meet they were backing and felt the smell of it my mouth start watering. So, I stopped by and had a duner and airian.

I have been told that Kizilkaya is very well known fast food cafeteria and there is another Kizilkaya cafeteria onTaksim square.

    Prices:
    Duner: 6YTL
    Tosted sandwich: 1.5YTL
    Hamburger: 1.5 YTL
    Orange juice(fresh): 2.5YTL
    Apple juice(fresh): 2.5YTL
    Tea (turkish): 0.5YTL
    Coke: 1.5YTL
    Nesscafe: 2YTL
    Ayran: 1YTL

So, here is a small tip for Americans :)
Duner is the Turkish version of burrito.

Airian is a beverage made out of yoghurt and water.

I would highly recommend that menu to everyone who wants to taste the local cuisine and safe some money at the same time :)))

    Fish sandwiches at Eminonu
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the Eminonu pier, near the Galata Bridge, you can find a couple of little boats that sell fish sandwichs with tomate. The fish is fresh, just fished and they cook it (grill) right there. They cost 1 euro each, and you can buy some drink in one of the many bars by the ticket office. I had mine with a hot (bloody hot) tea, standing on a fence looking at the rush of Galata Bridge…

    Orient Express Restaurant
  • Tip Rating:
  • Founded in 1890, this restaurant is one of the few remains of the golden age of Sirkeci Railway Station, when it was the ending point of the famous “Orient Express” train.
Now it has been refurbished and decorated with all kind of memorabilia about Agatha Christie and the 30s. I haven’t had lunch there, just saw it from outside but seemed a quiet fresh place for lunch out of the rush of Eminonu Area.

    Can Restaurant
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is one of the first little restaurant you can find at the right side of Divan Yolu as you go up the street from Hagia Sophia.
The owner is always at the door “fishing” customers. Cool stuff and moderate prices. They have fix menus too. Try the thick yoghourt!

    Hoca Cami Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • This little alley offers a great variety of local restaurants, with nice terraces on the street. Is a bit apart from the traffic, so is nice, specially for dinner. In these restaurants you don’t have menu, you go to the kitchen and poin to the dishes you wanna eat.
To get there, take Ankara Caddesi from Sirkeci Railway Station, turn left at Ebusuud Caddesi, and take the first at the left, towards the Hoca mosque.

    Shish Kebabs
  • Tip Rating:
  • This meat & vegetables sandwiches in a round bread are typical turkish “take away” food. The man at the stand will cut you the meat from the column, add some salad, tomato, sauces… and put all this mixed into an “envelope” bread!! Delicious, but take many napkins, it’s really difficult to eat that, LOL
You can find these everywhere, this pic was taken on the one at Eminonu pier, building number 3.
