Nu Teras: Fantastic house music, views, crowd

by Alikatt Updated Oct 20, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Reservations are a must, at least two weeks in advance in the summer time for this rooftop restaurant in Taxim. This is in the same league as Reina where the Istanbulites and expats like to frequent. It caters to my taste and the ambiance to me is divine. Although the food is on the pricey side, it is excellent. Prepare to spend around $120 for dinner for two with two drinks. The apres dinner party is a couple of steps down from the dining deck. The Bosphorus and the lights from the Asian side behind it beckons. It is only open from June to mid-September.

Favorite Dish: Just about everything there is good since the chef is trained in continental cuisine. They have an excellent wine list as well plus a fully stocked bar for the discerning dining clientele. Service is nearly at par with a 5-star hotel. Jeans are acceptable. The guest list is restricted to thier own VIPs and those whose names appear on the dinner reservations list. Usually, you must dine to get in althought we just walked in on a Saturday night this past summer. They seem to have relaxed their rules or maybe they just recognized me from my previous visits. (ha ha)

Situated next to the first oldest mosque in Istanbul which is undergoing repairs and in a near but unfrequented area of Fatih, with great service, great views of Galata, very understated, good prices and music, this was a surprise as i would never have thought of visiting the area but well worth it,even in the rain.

Favorite Dish: I had the beef and got what i asked for exactly, which is almost a first.Melted in my mouth.

  • Hala and Kebab Dunyasi: Budget Travellers

by aakunz Written Sep 22, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Budget travellers will find Istanbul a great place. You can get extremely high quality eats at very low prices. While in Istanbul, don't miss the opportunity to have a lunch at HALA (aunt) which has two branches -one accross Istiklal Caddesi- and one on a sidestreet of Istiklal, that I can't remember right now. Among other anatolian dishes you'll have to try the delicious Spinach and Cheese "Gozleme" and the unbeatable Manti (something that resembles meat tortellini with yoghurt and paprika sauce.

For Kebap lovers, just go to Kebap Dunayasi at the start of Istiklal Caddesi, close to Burger King and the tram stop. Believe me, you won't be able to decide what to eat first. I propose you Tavuk Sote (chopped chicken kebap with mushrooms) or Alinazik (lamb kebap in red sauce with lots of yoghurt.

Both places are alcohol free, perfectly clean with excellent service at low prices. You'll find many locals there.

Tasteless, sour sauce on dishes, lack of using tastefull ingredients .
I know many cuisines but this is the worst I have encountered.

Favorite Dish: The Adana kebab is a little spicier so a least it has some taste

just next to the palace at Beylerbeyi, on the Asian side of the city, you can enjoy a snack with the Istanbullus. Down on the waterfront take your seat at one of the cafes and order the speciality, deep fried mussels, served in a slab of fresh crusty bread, with a garlicy sauce.
Don' t sit too close to the mosque though, if you want to wash it down with a beer, as the cafes closest, out of respect only serve tea and soft drinks.
Try and be there for sunset, and watch the sun going to bed over the Istanbul skyline.

    Favorite Dish: The mussels

    Maria'nin Bahçesi: Anatolian Aegean Delight

by TheTurkishBrit Written Aug 10, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Maria's Garden hides on the shore of the sea of Marmara surrounded by other worthy(and some not so worthy) restaurants. What makes Maria's so special is the twist she brings to the menu. True Aegean dishes with a bit of Greek flavour. The range is wide and every dish more than exceeds expectations.
The garden is cool and green, the interior reflects Maria's own eclectic taste. The bathroom feels as though you are at a friend's house with all the toiletries artfully lying around to be used! The Sunday brunch is well worth waiting for too, fab food, newspapers and a really laidback atmosphere for around 20USD.Reservations essential at the weekend.

Favorite Dish: Seafood borek:stuffed with prawms
Midye or karides sahanaki: mussels or prawns in a creamy garlicky sauce
Smoked salmon with roquefort and walnuts
    all the salads
    Mussels with rice
    prawns and okra
I better stop as I am feeling too hungry now!

A restaurant with a great history.Opened in 1957, was a meeting point for travellers. Now guests can enjoy traditional turkish menus.

This shop is recommended to me by a local.
    Good food though.Local menu available.
Most of turkish food will have bread, cheese, tomato and potato.Unlike asian food, they are by no means spicy.More towards European style of food.

Specialty : fast food and turkish pudding

Turkish menu inside is nice too watch for this signboard

The Pudding Shop: A Middling Place to Eat

    by Paul2001 Written Jun 19, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Pudding Shop was at onetime the place to go for the backpacker set however I understand that the place has changed. The crowd here was simply middle class tourists. The food here was fairly good but not remarkable and the prices standard for the area in a high tourist zone.

Favorite Dish: I had a good kefta dinner and, guess what, rice pudding, also decent.

    On the street!

by Svillegas Written Jun 8, 2005

Around the Galata bridge there’s a lot fishermen that sell fish sandwiches, cheap and good.

Another option is to buy some fresh food to the fishermen and bring it to one of these street cooks to cook it, delicious!

    Pieta Cafe&Restaurant

by erendilight Updated May 11, 2005

This little cafe-like place is located on Istiklal Avenue, just next to the Santa Maria Church, and seeks to also host arts events. Every evening (except Mondays) they have live harp music flowing out into the street. The restored 104-year old building has great acoustics, making Pieta ideal for live music performances.

A perfect, peaceful experience, recommended just after walking under the rain:) A very talented arpen player... great music.. very nive staff... calm and relaxing athmosphere...

Favorite Dish: try toamtoe soup... and great salads...

  • Ziya Sark Sofrasi: Different cultural atmosphere with delicious food

by infinitys Written May 9, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of the most distinguishing point of this restaurant is its different historical and cultural environment. In every branch of ''Ziya Sark Sofrasi ''; you will taste and find some of the cultural elements of Turkey in the decoration.
Service is fast plus the staff is friendly and welcoming. Another important fact is that breakfast is also given.
There are different branch offices of this restaurant in several locations of Istanbul (Florya,Aksaray etc...).
Try '' icli kofte'' (a special turkish meatball) with nice spicy recipes. Also lahmacun (turkish pizza) is another fantastic option to try out. Kebabs and barbecue options will other types of food choices. Finally ending your meal with a special type of dessert called '' Kunefe '' (sweet with cheese) will be an unforgetable memory from Turkey :)

Favorite Dish: Salads, oils, hot breads, some traditional drinks of Turkey (Ayran,Salgam water with spice etc..) and recipes are really great here :)
