Modern Art Museum, Istanbul
I had most of a day to explore Istanbul and took the opportunity to take the tram from the airport to the stop close to the Istanbul Modern. Located next to the water over the bridge and behind a row of comfortable looking restaurants/cafes, I found it to be very engaging, as the exhibits were interesting and oftentimes provocative. From short movies, to creative sculptures to an excellent collection of photographs documenting the issues Turkey deals with on a daily basis, I had to pull myself away to head back for my flight. There was a great deal of audio interfacing with the visual exhibits.
I definitely suggest u to visit the "Modern Arts Istanbul Museum" on ur Istanbul journey, to see the exhibitions and modern arts, mostly every month another one ...
And the location is amazing, just at the sea at the Bosphorus, in which after ur visit u can dine and have ur lunch or sip ur drinks facing the perfect Bosphorus and Islands view ...Istanbul Modern is located in Karakoy, by the Bosphorus sea in a great venue and the museum hosts art in 8000 sqm. Polyphonic and dynamic cultural center
The main galleries of the museum will exhibit the principal trends and works of modern and contemporary Turkish art since the early 20th century. Istanbul Modern will update this exhibition at regular intervals with contributions from other important collections in Turkey, as well as acquisitions and loans.
The sculpture garden at the entrance to the museum will present a historical survey of contemporary sculpture. The new media area in the entrance foyer provides a wireless network environment where visitors can view examples of new media art and other artwork in a digital museum environment. Visitors to this area will also be able to view video art that has been created with an interdisciplinary approach using digital technology and which reflects distinct and emerging trends.
In addition to exhibitions, Istanbul Modern is developing diverse activities and social spaces that will make it a "living museum". Experts have designed educational programs for a wide range of age groups and created a special space solely for these programs. Students will be able to attend workshops on such topics as "Getting to Know an Artist" and "Understanding and Interpreting Works of Art".
The museum's Library of Modern Art, which is located in the building, will be open to the public. Although the core of the library will consist of materials on modern Turkish art, it will also carry reference material on the main issues, movements and trends in modern international art and eminent works of art.
Istanbul Modern's permanent collection is housed on the first floor of the museum. The collection is presented thematically to demonstrate the main trends and major works of modern and contemporary Turkish art since the early 20th century. Drawing on other institutional collections in Turkey, Istanbul Modern will update this exhibition at regular intervals.
This place is located in Tophane, at the old warehouses of Shipping and Dock Administration. It was first used in Istanbul Biennial in 1987, which called First International Contemporary Art Exhibits that day. At 2001, the Warehouse No:4 was given permanently to the Contemporary Art Museum.
It has a great location. It lies behind the Nargile Lounges of Tophane and has a Topkapi Palace view from its windows.
It has very important and valuable pieces like “Merchant of Arms” of Osman Hamdi Bey, some works of Bedri Baykam, Fahrelnissa Zeid…
Museum has both permanent and temporary exhibitions. I visited “Contemporary Sculpture” and “All Colors of The Rainbow” temporary exhibitions here. Both were great. Many of the sculptures exhibited here now in santralistanbul.
The place has a nice café with wonderful view and a shop. You can enjoy a cup of coffee across Golden Horn and Topkapi Palace after visiting the museum.

If you like art, i strongly recommend you to visit Istanbul Modern Art Museum.
It is the first and only modern art musem of Istanbul. It was opened in November 2004 and attracted many visitors since then. I was willing to see this museum so much that as soon as i arrived at Istanbul from Bursa by Yalova- Yenikapi sea-bus, i went there. If you do not want to wait the opening of the museum in front of the door, please remember that it is open between 10:00-18:00 and closed on mondays. The entrance fee is 5YTL.
The museum is built on an old warehouse belong to Turkish Harbour Enterprise. On the first floor (the entrance), there is the permenant collection where the works of Turkish artists since the begining of 20th century can be seen on a tematic order. In addition to this, it is possible to visit the temporary exhibits on the second floor.
Visiting the museum would not allow you only to see works of modern Turkish painters, but also see a wonderful view of Boshphourus since the museum is located just by the sea accross Topkapi Palace.
It is possible to enjoy the view from the Museum Cafe which allows you watching High Sophia, Topkapi Palace, The Leander’s Tower when having a good meal. The cafe is open after the museum is closed as well. The entrance is possible form the Statue Garden.
There are some chuches, mosques and other historical that worths visiting around the museum. I advise you to go Tophane-i Amire (15th century canon foundry)
