Princes' Islands: Buyukada Island

  • Buyukada is a really interesting place to visit within a relatively short distance from Istanbul. One can enjoy both the voyage and the stay. The traditional architecture and restaurants are really nice. I guess it's an ideal place for a short excursion.

This is one of the Prince's Islands, the biggest one. You can get there with the ferry. I'd recommend you to spend there a whole day. There you may rent a bike or a cab (similar to the Fiakers in Vienna).
Take some food to feed the the birds.

The princes' islands are 9 islands in the sea of Marmara that you can get by a ferry (2 YTL for one direction).

On those islands you can't use cars so you have 3 options :
    1. horse carriages
    2. bicycles
    3. walk

in Buyukada a long round trip around the island will cost you something like 35 YTL.

The name of the islands is from princes that was sent to exile.

  • If youre up for a hike i would recomend climbing to Hagia Yorgi monestary in Buyukada. there is a restaurant at the top so you can sit down and enjoy the panaromic scenery of istanbul and the other islands while enjoying some raki and meze.

These islands are off the south shore of the Asian side of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. They are attractive with neat little towns such as Buyukada, where no cars are allowed. There is a lot of architecture from around 1890-1914 and 1923-1935, as well as some older buildings. The islands are used as recreation spots for Istanbulis so there are many places to eat and relax.

The boat ride also gives a neat view of the city and the surrounding area, and allows one to see other parts which a Bosphorus boat ride doesn't cover. One gets to see the south shore of the Asian side of Istanbul, much of which is newer and covered with suburbs, etc., in addition to the 1908 Haydarpasa rail station; "Leander's Tower"; some of the city's extensive docks; and a different view of Sultanahmet/Saray Burnu.

  • Directions: Take a ferry from Eminonu (north shore of the old city) or Kabatas (near Dolmabahce). Fast ferries go there, too, but the slow ones are more fun and only take about an hour from Eminonu to Buyukada. At Eminonu, look for the pier with the sign "Adalar."

"The paradise on this earth" these are the princess islands.

Buyukada "the big island" is the biggest among 9 seperate islands that are called princess Islands.

These Islands are far from Istanbul, they were used as excile for princess at the beginning and then some other people (politicians , criminals...etc).

Just within 90 minutes,we had been there.

No cars at all, only horses and bicycles (transportation).

    It's very special.

Now it is time to relax. So today’s program is to take a ferry and visit one of the princess islands. There are 5 small islands near to Istanbul; each of them has a different sight. However I would advice to visit "Buyukada", which is the biggest of all and the name is also Big Island.

Ferry to the islands leaves from Eminonu. And the schedule could be obtained from the below address... http://www.tdi.com.tr/siradayalocirbos.shtml, You should look on the left side where "Sirkeci Kalkis" was written, which is depart from Eminonu, and follow the line for arrival to "Buyukada"

After stopping in 3 islands, It takes around 1,5 hours to reach Buyukada One favorite feature at the island is the Silence.. .. As there are no private vehicles allowed on the island. Horse and carriage rides around the island are available which are locally called as Faytons. You can have a full round trip of the island or a half course by the Faytons. I would advice to have a half tour to "Ayayorgi", where there is an old Greek Monastery. You can also walk to the monastery, however to climb the hill is rather difficult. If you take a fayton to Ayayorgi, it will leave you on a square and you need to climb up a very sharp hill. At the top of the hill old monastery is nice to visit, however the best thing is to have a cold drink (Beer) or nice food at the restaurant, operated by local folks. The view of Istanbul is outstanding and you can have a chance to see a full spot of Istanbul. Have your beer with some fried potato and enjoy the landscape. On the way back you can walk to the harbor, While you are walking you will see very nice summer houses, all attractive and elegant. So don’t forget your camera. You can tour around the center of the island or if it is summer time you can enjoy swimming in the island. So carry your swimsuits also... I recommend no to visit the islands at weekends in summer time, it will be packed with people..

Note: For more info and pictures visit my Buyukada Traveloque..

Islands within Marmara Sea, which is adorned with nine islands, was the banishing place of the Byzantium princes. Today they are now wealthy Istanbul residents' escaping places for cool winds during summer months and 19th century smart houses. Biggest one of the islands is Buyukada. You can have a marvelous phaeton travel between pine trees or have a swim within one of the numerous bays around islands!

Other popular islands are Kinali, Sedef, Burgaz and Heybeliada. Regular ferry voyages are connecting islands to both Europe and Asia coasts. There is a rapid sea bus service from Kabatas during summers
