The Suleiman's Mosque ( Suleymaniye in Turkish and Arabic) is the second largest but finest and most magnificent of the imperial mosque complexes in the city. The construction of the Suleiman's Mosque began in 1550 and the mosque itself was completed in 1557. Leave a Comment

The Suleimaniye mosque is preceded by a courtyard with a portico of exceptional grandeour, with beautiful columns of porphyry, marble and grenite. At the four corners of the courtyard rise the four great minarets. These four minarets are traditionally said to present the fact that Suleyman was the fourth sultan to reign in Istanbul; while the ten serefs or balconies denote that he was the tenth sultan of the Ottoman. The Suleymaniye Mosque was founded by Suleyman the Magnificent and designed by the master architect Sinan. As well as being a place of worship it included a hospital, soup kitchen, school and bath house and a welfare system that tended to the needs of the poor of the city. The complex is very worthy of the name magnificent. From the soaring minarets, the peacefulness of the courtyard to the beauty and tranquility of the Mosque's interior. Not as highly decorated as the Blue Mosque it is equally impressive with its fine masonary, decorated dome and intricate calligraphy. The tomb of Suleyman, next to the Mosque, is also worth visiting. Ceramic stars are set into the ceiling overlooking the coffins of Suleyman, his daughter and two of his successors. The Suleymaniye is the second largest mosque in Istanbul but by far the finest and most magnificient in the city.It is a wonderful monument to its founder, Suleyman the magnificent, and a master work of Sinan, the greatest of Ottoman achitects, buried near it in a small building. The mosque is the most important Ottoman building in Istanbul. The construction of Suleymaniye began in 1550 the mosque itself was completed in 1557, but all the buildings of the complex were finished some years after. Around the Mosque courtyard on three sides are arranged the other builings of the complex .Nearly all of them have been well restored and some of them are once again serving the people of Istanbul as they did in the days of Suleyman (Hospital, school) Leave a Comment

The second largest mosque in the city was built in 1557 by Mimar Sinan on the order of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificient. It was built during the most splendid period of the Ottoman Empire. The silhouette of the awesome mosque is a landmark of the city. The court faces the Golden Horn and offers a nice view. The inside decoration is sober, based on alternate pale and red stones, stained glass windows, carved marble minbar and calligraphy. The feeling when I entered was the magnificence and the elegance of the building, a vast space almost square of 59 by 58 m. The door that joins outer and inner courtyards is unique. The complex includes the mosque, madrasa, hospital, lunatic asylum, infirmary tombs, a hamam, a market and a primary school. The tombs of Süleyman the Magnificent and his wife Hürrem (Roxelana) are in a covered cemetery.

This mosque was founded by Suleyman the Magnificent, under whose sultanship the Ottoman Empire reached its greatest extent, right up to the gates of Vienna. Its grounds are an oasis of peace in noisy, crowded Istanbul except during the call to prayer, which is echoed back over the Golden Horn from the mosques to the north. The tomb of Suleyman himself is here and open for visitors. Inside the mosque is a vast, high-domed space (which is why the picture is a composite of different photographs). There is no entrance charge although a donation is expected, and this is still a working mosque so you must take your shoes off before entering and behave appropriately.
