Topkapi Palace: Topkapi Palace Harem
  • Tip Rating:
  • Harem
The harem is the section of the Palace where the Sultan, his mother, the princess and the ladies of the palace lived.
Located in the third courtyard, the Harem continued to grow life a living entity. With these ongoing additions there was no continuation of a set architectural style. The Harem of which only parts are open to the public, contains hundreds of room and corridors which are all embellished with Ottoman ornamentation.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Kasr-i Adl (Justice Tower)
Adjacent to the Harem this watch tower forms an important paul of the Topkapı Palace silhouette. Built in the reign of Sultan Mehmed, the Conqueror the tower was repeatedly rebuilt. The tower as it stands to-day was designed and built by the architect Sarkis Balyan.

Topkapi Palace: The Topkapi Palace Part 2 - The Harem
  • Tip Rating:
  • Probably the most exciting part of the Topkapi Palace to visit is the Harem. Contrary to popular images this is not where the Sultun engaged in sinful behaviour with scantly clad slave girls. Rather, it is where he actually lived with his family which would include his wives, children and servents. Still the Sultan did have many concubines and they were quartered here too.
One can only visit a small portion of the total of over 400 rooms in the Harem and these can be seen only by way of escorted tour for 7million lira during my visit. Fortunately the rooms that you can see are the most spectacular. The tour begins at the Carriage Gate and then proceeds through the various chambers, corridors and courtyards (the Harem seemingly has countless courtyards) were the members of the Royal circle would congregate according to position. Probably the most stunning room is the Emperor's Chamber which is decorated in dreamy blue Delft tile. It is here that the Sultan's household would gather together and be entertained by musicians. Other highlights of the tour are the Black Eunuch's courtyard with more amazing tiling and the Privy Chamber of Murat III, which has yet more wonderful tiling and a great fountain to boot. The tour ends by leading you into the Third Courtyard of the Topkapi Palace.
Tours are conducted every half hour from 10am to noon and from 1pm to 4pm.

    Topkapi Palace: Topkapi
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the world's great palaces, this sprawling monument to the sultans rests atop a hill at the junction of the Bosphorus and the Golden Hind.
It is not in the tradition of European palaces but more in the Middle Eastern style where it is set around courtyards and was the home of the sultans from the 15th to the 19th centuries.
There are korans decorated in gold filigree, circular shaped hand-carved cots inlaid with jewels, 13,000 miniatures and manuscripts, four dynasties of Chinese porcelain, the silken robes of the sultans, each preserved when the individual died, famous jewels such as the 86 carat Spoonmakers diamond and, not to be missed, the amazing armoury.

    Topkapi Palace: Topkapi palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • When Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror took Istanbul in 1453, he first ordered the construction of a new palace for this new Ottoman capital, on a site in the district of Beyazit where Istanbul University stands today. But before long, he changed his mind and had a number of buildings constructed on the headland to the southeast. This was to become the palace later known as Topkapi.
Topkapi Palace (Topkapi Sarayi), Istanbul, was the seat of the Ottoman Sultans from Mehmet the Conqueror in the 1450s until Mahmut II in 1839.
This (below) is the Middle Gate (Bab-üs Selâm), between the First Court (Birinci Avlu), Court of the Janissaries, and the Second Court.

There is also a beautiful treasury in Topkapi palace.

Topkapi Palace: View from Topkapi Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • From a few places of the palace the view over the city is great. This picture is taken from a terrace on the northwestern side and you can see Sülymaniye Camii.
From the restaurant on the northeastern side there is a great view over Sea of Marmara.

  • Maybe the most famous site in Istanbul is Topkapi Palace, built in the 15th century as the residence of the sultans. Here we can see a typical view of the harem - the sultan's private quarters. For more photos have a look at the travelogue.

Topkapi Palace: Topkapi Palace Bagdat pavillon
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bagdat Pavilion
Located in the fourth courtyard of the palace. This pavilion is sited to allow uninterrupted views of the golden Horn, Galata and the Sea of Marmara. Built in 1639 on the orders of Sultan Murat IV, it is one of the best examples of Turkish art and architecture. Standing today in its original from the exterior is decorated with tiles and internally these are very rare decorations of arabesque painted on leather.
