Public transport of Istanbul city
  • Tip Rating:
  • Istanbul has 2 big part. One is the Asian side and the other is european side.We live on two continents.I travel every day from asian side to european side.my home in Asian side my work in European side.
So about 15milion people are living in Istanbul that means lots of traffic and wasting lots of time.
I suggest you to use sea and trains and metro-ligth metro or tram.Keep away from the Bus and Taxis.Taxi is cheaper than the other big cities of the world but to much time you will loose in the traffic. In the old city (sultanahmet area)use your feet.

Best thing is walk. For to reach other parts of the istanbul use the other transportation vehicles.

I give you all transport links of the istanbul.

The 2'nd heritage tram line reopened in 2003 on a single track line at Kadikoy (Asian side of Istanbul)with the same line number:20 as 1950's. This is similar to Beyoglu (Taksim) tram but the length is 2,6Kms. and more attractive becouse this tram route passes from habitats and meanwhile narrow streets . The ticket price is 0,50 cents.
Pay attention to the balloon flying upper in the picture; that is the viewing balloon here I mention in separate thread.

Bus T4: Sultanahmet to Taksim and back.

A great way to get from Sultanahmet to Taksim and back is by City Bus.

    Cost: 1 million Lira

I did not notice this specifically mentioned in other places I looked for info on getting around from one area to another, so I thought I would clue you in.

Bus T4 stops on the Hippodrome at Sultanahmet Square, North Bound travel side,
just before Ayasofya Medani - where the ATM machines are and Tour Buses park. Go past those to the corner and look left for the bus with the T4 sign in the window.

In Taksim Square there is a large bus area and you will be dropped off just before the turn in area. This is the same place you will get the bus to return.

At the curb near the steps to Taksim Square: There is a sign that says "Peron 3" and lists buses 61B, 83MT, & T4 with schedules.

Give the driver your Lira note and he will hand you a small metal and plastic tab. You take this tab and depress a round button on the front of a meter box that you just stepped passed as you where entering. Hand the tab back to the driver.

While I was there at the end of November, work was still progressing on the extension of the tram line over the Galata Bridge from Eminonu. I am not sure where the tram line will end, but it didnt appear that it was going all the way to Taksim square yet.

So for the near future this bus will still be the best way to get from these two important areas that I think most tourists will want to visit on more than one occasion during their stay.

The Ferry Boats that cruise through the waters around Istanbul are not only an efficient way to get around, but can also provide you with some of the best views of the city. There are several ferry points around the city, including ones on the European side in Karaköy, Eminönü, and Besiktas, and ones on the Asian side, including Kadiköy & Bostanci. There are ferries that can take you up the Bosphorus near the Black Sea, and others that can take you to the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara. Ferries are actually the best way to take a trip over to the Asian side and check out some of the sights. And most ferry rides are fairly inexpensive, usually costing no more than a couple of U.S. dollars.

    Trains & Trams
  • Tip Rating:
  • Trains & Trams can be a very efficient and inexpensive way of getting around Istanbul, especially during the day when traffic is backed up. Lines are located throughout the new city in the Beyoglu, Sisli, & Besiktas districts, as well as the older parts across the Golden Horn near Sultanahmet. There are kiosk machines at each stop to purchase the tokens to ride, and they cost less than $1 per ride. One of the most interesting trams is the Istiklal Caddesi Tram, which runs down this famous Istanbul avenue in the Taksim area, and has restored 19th century street cars running along the line.

    Tram in Istanbul
  • Tip Rating:
  • Probably the most convenient and easy way of transport in the Touristy area is the Tram that runs from Eminonu to Zeytinburnu..

All Major touristy attractions are located in the Old Istanbul peninsula and the tram is passing near to all of these places.. The starting point is the Eminonu port where the spice market, New mosque are located and also you can take a bosphorus boat from the harbour. Afterwards it stops at "Sirkeci", The Famous Orient Express train station. Than it leads to "Gulhane", where in summer local festivals are being held..

The third stop is the "Sultanahmet".. Main center of the touristy area.. Blue mosque, haiga sophia, Topkapi palace are in walking distance.. Tram takes the pedestrian street and and leads to "Cemberlitas".. And afterwards to "Beyazit". This stop is where you should get off to visit the Covered bazaar. Also The Istanbul University is in walking distance.. The next stop is the "University", The literature Faculty is located here.. and the following stop is the "Laleli", many Hotels are located in this region and many shops are open till late hours.. The next stop is "Yusufpasa", there is a connection to the Metro line to the Airport..

Afterwards the tram will continue to its route however those are mostly the resedential locations that have not so much interest...

    Enjoy the tram in Istanbul.

    Taxis
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taxis are really cheap here (30% cheaper than in Spain I guess). Istanbul is really a city to walk through, but if you are going from Taksim to Hagia Sophia, better take a taxi, it could be too much walk for a summer day… A ride like that will be no more than 5-6 euros.
Last time I was in Istanbul (1997) I found many “illegal” taxis, but this time (2003) all of them had its taximeter, so just be sure the counter runs and relax…
