This train connects Thessaloniki and Istanbul daily. The trip lasts 10-12 hours, depending on the delay at the border railway station of Pythio. The train leaves from Thessaloniki at 8 every night. The ticket for the trip costs about 50euros, for second class in a two-bed compartment, and for first class about 85euros in a single bed compartment.
In my opinion it is a very good way to reach Istanbul, since you travel during the nigh, sleeping, and you arrive in the morning, to have the whole day ahead of you. It definately beats driving! Although it was brutal to have to wake up in the middle of the night to have your passport checked, once on the greek side of the borders and once on the turkish side.. at least they come on the train and check them in your compartment :-)

Night time on the Ankara Express
This was the first time I had ever travelled on a sleeper train and it was fantastic! I was excited from the moment I read about the train journey on www.seat61.com (which you should definitely check out if you're considering this trip).

We pre-booked our tickets through the TCDD website. The information is available in English and Seat61 takes you through it step-by-step. We did get a little confused when we went to pick up our tickets because it turned out we'd arrived a bit early - the earliest you can pick up your tickets is 1 hour before departure. Luckily, Haydarpasa has a restaurant/bar which made Jonathan very happy. The building is very beautiful too and sitting out on the steps and watching the ferries pull in to port is relaxing. The ferry is the easiest, cheapest and quickest way to get to the station from the Sultanahmet area - we decided to be clever, ignore advice and get a taxi which was just stupid as it took almost 3 hours and cost a small fortune - we did it because we wanted to drive across the Europe/Asia bridge but it's just not worth it.

Anyway, after we'd picked up our tickets we were dying to check out our room. The train was modern, clean and roomy. We had complete privacy in our room with a red velvet curtain for the window and the door was lockable from the inside. The seats were huge and comfy and we managed to pull down the top bunk and still sit on the chairs comfortably. There was a wash basin, mirror, mini fridge, coat hangers and hooks and plenty of space for luggage in our room. I've stayed in hotels that weren't this well equipped! The toilet and shower room are at the end of the carriage and did get a bit stinky and messy by morning but generally weren't as bad as most pubic toilets. I tried the restaurant car for a quick coffee in the morning. It was cheap and bright - not really the romantic, candlelit Orient Express job but it served its purpose and everyone was smiling.

one interesting way of getting to istanbul from greece is taking the night train from thessaloniki.
it leaves every evening from thessaloniki and arrives the next morning in istanbul.
you have 2 bed sleeper compartments onboard that are modern and comfortable and the trip is a real nice way to enter a new country.

My air. I was invited my TK and their airline was very reasonable.
We were a group of Travel agents and were showing the sites by bus and a guide. The Guide was the son of the Turkist airlines director at the time.

Get by plane or by bus from...
Get by plane or by bus from Bulgaria of Greece. All buses go to the Central Bus Station, where you can take the tube and a bus to get to the center.
Metro and bus are cheap. You can walk to get to all interesting places in the center of Istanbul. You can catch a taxi as it's not so expensive.
